Congratulations on getting the opportunity to take honors chemistry!
Success in this class depends upon a number of factors. Personal drive, being able to digest the notes (rather than just re-reading), and having exceptional study habits are a few tools to have in your arsenal to help you succeed. Having a strong background in science and math are also necessary for your success, and this summer assignment will help to ensure that you are reviewed and on target.
Below you will find the links to 4 tasks to complete this summer. During our first week together you will be given a 100 point assessment to determine your success with the information covered in the tasks below.
TASK #1
Memorize Element Symbols & Names 1 - 36
Below are two options to help you memorize these names and symbols.
You will need to be able to spell the names correctly and write the symbols correctly. Remember, when writing symbols, they are PRINTED, and the first letter is capitalized.
This task will comprise 25 points of the 100- point assessment.
I am a BIG fan of Quizlet. You will have access to several study sets to help you prepare for the units we will cover. Getting familiar with Quizlet will be a great help to you in our class. There are so many options to help you learn the material:
Flashcards - just the paper version, but virtual. The names on one side the symbol on the other.
Learn - sets up a variety of tasks to help you learn the content.
Write - you will be typing the names and symbols.
Spell - this option is my least favorite for my subject. This works better when learning a foreign language. Better to skip this option.
Test - this option creates a mock test for you to take.
Match - you will drag and drop symbols and names to match them correctly.
Gravity - is a game where you must answer questions before they drop to the bottom.
TASK #2
Review Scientific Notation
Below you will find links to three videos and a link to a worksheet. The first video will help refresh you on the concept of scientific notation, which was covered in middle school.
The second and third videos will show you how to CORRECTLY enter scientific notation into either a standard scientific calculator or a graphing calculator. I have found that most students have one or the other. I do have a classroom set of standard scientific calculators that you will be allowed to use when we are in class together. If you have your own calculator (standard or graphing) you may use it. All smartphones come with a calculator app installed. Your phone should automatically become scientific calculator when turned horizontally, while the calculator app is open. Just know that you will NOT be allowed to use a smartphone during class.
Remember - entering scientific notation is DIFFERENT than entering numbers with exponents!
This task will comprise 25 points of the 100-point assessment.
Link to Review Questions - you may print this or write your answers on notebook paper. Be prepared to explain/discuss your answers if called upon.
TASK #3
Review Lab Safety
Below you will find links for three components to this task. The first link will access a video that covers multiple aspects of lab safety. The second link a list of safety rules, some of which are not covered in the video.
The third link is for a Blooket game. I am a BIG fan of Blooket. You will have several assignments using this format. Getting familiar with Blooket will be a great help to you in our class. Be sure and use your actual first and last name when you are asked to enter a nickname in the game.
This task will comprise 25 points of the 100-point assessment.
Link for Blooket Game - Be sure and use your first and last names when playing the game.
TASK #4
Review of basic chemistry knowledge
Below you will find links for review videos and questions set up via a Google Form. These videos cover concepts that should have been covered in middle school science classes, or high school biology or physical science classes.
This task will comprise 25 points of the 100-point assessment.
Link to Google Form worksheet - you must be using your mcnairy.org account to access this form.
