Learning Objectives

1. understand and describe the development of the physician mindset through medical education.

2. utilize this understanding in developing innovative curricula by design thinking.

3. educate others on the theories medical education is ideally based upon.

Background

Design thinking is a process that aids in creating innovative educational approaches. The focus is on the needs of the learner. Three essential components needed in design thinking are empathy, ideation, and experimentation. Empathy requires a solid understanding of the process of medical student and resident education. A process cannot be improved unless it is first understood. The ultimate goal of medical education is to develop the physician mindset. Once understood, ideation and experimentation can ensue.

Description of Session

An interactive session utilizing an internet-based polling system and the learner's smartphone will occur. Assessment of the learners understanding of concepts will be done upon introduction of each and reflection through the think-pair-share method will occur. The learner will be provided teaching material for their use after the session through a web-based site.

The concepts introduced will include:

1) The continuum of medical education

2) The physician mindset and its development

3) Epistemology, a priori and a posteriori knowledge

4) Availability heuristics or mental shortcuts

5) Zone of Proximal Development and scaffolding

6) Black and white, divergent, and convergent thinking

7) Skill-based, rule-based, and knowledge-based performance

8) The Lens of Profound Knowledge
