Unesco Cities of Literature Short Play Festival

The Theatre Studies programme at the University of Otago and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature are excited to announce the 2019 UNESCO Cities of Literature Short Play Festival. The Festival will be held at the University 12-20 September, and will be one of the special events marking the University’s 150th anniversary. The Festival will feature productions of 20-minute plays, or 20-minute segments of longer plays. Those plays come from playwrights, theatre companies and tertiary Theatre or Drama programmes in other UNESCO Cities of Literature, as well as from Dunedin and elsewhere in New Zealand. Some writers and companies will bring their own productions, while University of Otago Theatre Studies students will stage a selection of the dozens of scripts that playwrights have submitted for consideration.

Dunedin Unesco City of Literature

Dunedin is a magnificent example of a small city that lives, breathes and connects through its people, its culture and its intense love of literature. Situated in the South Island of New Zealand, Dunedin has a population of approximately 120,000 people and although a rather young city in worldly terms, it is well known as a university town of excellence in research and learning, and a city where writers, books and literature thrive.

Dunedin became New Zealand’s first UNESCO Creative City when it was awarded ‘City of Literature’ status in 2014. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) is designed to develop international co-operation among cities and encourages partnerships that deliver on UNESCO’s global priorities of culture and development, and sustainable development. There are seven different Creative City themes in the Network: folk art, gastronomy, media arts, design, film or music and literature.

UNESCO Cities of Literature work together to build strong global partnerships: encouraging literary exchanges, creating cross-cultural initiatives and developing local, national and international literary links. Each City is dedicated to pursuing excellence in literature on a local level, engaging citizens in a dynamic culture of words.

Arcade Theatre Company

Arcade is an award-winning theatre company which strives to provide a platform supporting vibrant and diverse voices in the Dunedin theatrical scene. Arcade was established in 2018 to provide a platform for emerging Dunedin theatre makers to practice and display their craft. Arcade exists to remove the barriers of entry into the Arts industry by taking over financing, production and marketing with the aim of enabling artists to generate work. Our company actively targets the under 35 market, a group who are underserved by the other providers in the city by creating fresh and exciting work. For this reason, we keep our ticket prices affordable as we acknowledge a subsidy is necessary to keep our audience engaged with the theatre. Arcade won 'Company of the Year' at the 2018 Dunedin Theatre Awards.

Suitcase Theatre

Suitcase Theatre is a small Dunedin theatre group focused on producing great theatre for the theatre’s sake.

We are passionate about producing theatre that is supportive of and directly meaningful to the community we exist within. In order to facilitate this we have become a charitable trust – woohoo!

Therefore – we produce a collection of both meaningful and silly theatrical things for your viewing pleasure. We are also recruited to contribute to and collaborate on other projects. For example – A theatrical reading of the hunting of the snark, rehearsed readings at the Dunedin City Library and performing in “Hostage” a radio play created by Dunedin writers “The Playgroup”

Its been a busy year for the suitcase team, we’ll need a wee nap but will be back soon with more exciting antics.
