At the top left corner of a student's school computer screen, open the mcgivneygriffins.com bookmarks menu. Click on the 7Works option. Log in using Google. On your home page, click "Upload new hours." From there, add the date(s), time(s), category, and name of the service performed. There is also a box that requires a description and reflection of the service; it is recommended to outline the tasks you performed, as well as what you may have taken away from your experience.
Type the phone number or email address of the supervisor of the service project. This is the person in charge of the work completed - not a parent or friend. 7Works will automatically send a notification to the supervisor, so it is imperative that the information is typed correctly. The supervisor will verify that the hours included are correct and have the option to leave a comment.
After the supervisor has verified the hours, they will be approved by Works of Mercy admin.
The very root of service is to love another person. Love, contrary to our society's belief, is not a feeling but a conscious action; it is to put the needs of someone else before your own and to actively will their good. Service requires one to look at another as if they were Christ Himself and to feed, clothe, visit, and care for them, as He instructs His followers to do (Matthew 25:31-40)
Students may not be paid for the service they complete. Babysitting a family member or relative, completing household chores, conducting yard work for immediate family, or similar activities, does not count towards the Service Learning Program requirements. This is classified as an “expected” service.
School: Anything affiliated to Father McGivney Catholic High School that directly benefits the school community. Examples: working the concession stand at home games, assisting staff/faculty members, NHS Tutoring.
Parish: Anything affiliated to a church or parish (Catholic or not), including schools associated with churches. Examples: St. Elizabeth chicken dinner, St. Paul Kirchenfest, helping at Sts. Peter and Paul School, VBS/Totus Tuus, serving/lectoring/cantoring/etc. at Masses.
Community: Anything that benefits an organization or individual not directly affiliated with FMCHS or a surrounding parish. Examples: food pantry, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, FMCHS Mission Trip, dogsitting/babysitting (without pay), etc. See other opportunities for Community hours here.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure the supervisor of a service opportunity verifies their hours. If a supervisor has not verified the hours, check the status of the submission. If the verification status says "failed to send," this usually means that there is a typo in the contact information. Re-add a verification with the correct contact information. If the verification status says "sent," but it has been over 2 weeks since the hours were submitted, re-add a verification with the same information and reach out to the supervisor separately to remind them of that responsibility.
Service hour submissions that are rejected are as such for a reason. Typically, this reason is because the verifier did not confirm that the hours submitted were the hours actually worked.
7Works - our service hour platform - has an automatic identifier if a service opportunity happened longer than 30 days prior to its submission. This is to ensure personal responsibility on the part of the student that all service hours are being entered in a timely manner.
This submission cutoff applies only to student submissions of service hours. It does not apply to the supervisor verification or admin approval of the service hours. For example, if you have submitted your hours before the 30-day deadline but your supervisor has not verified them before the deadline, it will not count against you.
Service Hours are a requirement for advancing to the next grade and for graduating. If a student does not earn all of their necessary service hours for the year, they will be required to come to school over the summer and complete them.
Of course! FMCHS students are always ready and willing to serve the community. If you have a larger project that requires more volunteers, please fill out the Volunteer Request form. If you have any questions, please email worksofmercy@mcgivneygriffins.com.
