Welcome to the MCDS 3rd-8th Grade Student Tech Report for February 2024. These data were collected anonymously from MCDS students on campus.
Sample sizes:
8th Grade - 75 respondents / 83 enrolled (90%)
7th Grade - 75/83 (90%)
6th Grade - 78/83 (94%)
5th Grade - 61/62 (98%)
4th Grade - 49/60 (82%)
3rd Grade - 51/58 (88%)

SOFTWARE:
iMessage is the most popular app overall among all students across the grades surveyed. Many say they "check texts" first when they open their device.
Most MCDS 6th-8th graders report that they participate in social media. These proportions are up slightly from 2022 in each grade.
55% of 6th graders
65% of 7th graders
79% of 8th graders
6th graders show low participation in TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram.
TikTok is most popular among 7th graders.
Snapchat is most popular among 8th graders.
TikTok is down in popularity in all grades versus 2022; Fortnite is up in popularity, though.
Across all grades, around half of students play video games regularly. Around 15-20% don't play video games.

💻 TECH AT SCHOOL 💻
Most students think their Chromebook use at school is nicely balanced with time off-screen.

Most students see their time limits, or lack thereof, as working for them.
As students get older, a higher percentage believe they would benefit from less screen time.
As students get older, a higher percentage of students report having a lack of time limits, which works for them.
A higher percentage of free time is spent on tech as students get older.
