Pre School skills: Preschoolers will learn at least 25 simple songs and games as they explore steady beat and rhythm. They will start to define same and different as they hear it in music and see it in art. They will learn to explore personal space using a variety of movements: walk, jump, hop, run, skip, gallop, lunge, and tip toe. Children will experience musical story telling, familiarize themselves with the different types of voices (whisper, speak, sing, call), pracitce taking turns, and play a variety of instruments.
Kindergarten skills: Students will learn over 25 songs, to keep a steady beat and rhythm with their body and simple instruments, begin reading music from symbols, explore and maintain personal space, build upons music and movement vocabulary, experience a variety of music, use all four voices (whisper, speak, sing, and call), and define same and different.
1st and 2nd Grade skills: 1st and 2nd graders will build upon steady beat and rhythm, both on their bodies and their violins. They will learn and sing simple songs with growing complexity. 1st graders will know rhythms: ta, titi, ta-rest, and ta-a before the end of the year. 2nd graders will know rhythms: ta, titi, ta-rest, ta-a, tiri tiri, ta-a rest before the end of the year. 2nd graders will familiarize themselves with the basic scale, how it sounds on the violin, how to sing it, how to sing using solfa, and how it looks on the staff. Children will also begin creating their own rhythms and melodies using these skills.
Students in 3rd grade begin choosing their specials. Every student will choose an art special, music special, and movement special.
Taught by Dr. Reynolds, students can choose to have art once or twice a week. In allignment with State Standards and local essential learning skills, students will work with a variety of mediums to create and learn about visual arts.
Taught by Mr. McKenzie, students can choose either "PE" class or "Move." PE involves competitive sports like basketball and soccer. The "Move" class will range from dance to yoga, endurance building to aerobics.
World-renowned pianist, Andre Watts, visited our piano class.
Students will have three music choices: violins, piano, and general music. The violins class, in partnership with Dr. Brenda Brenner at IU Jacobs School of Music, will continue violin performance skills, music literacy, and creativity. This group will perform in the December and April violin performances.
Piano class, co-taught by Maggie Olivo and Rebecca Luppe, lets students work at their own piece, gving them opportunities to play for each other as they develop music literacy and performance skills. This group will perform a fall and spring recital for families and Fairview staff.
General music, taught by Maggie Olivo, will meet Fridays. Students will sing, play instruments suchas drums and keyboards, play musical games, improvise, and develop music literacy skills.
All 4th-6th graders will sign up for their arts electives the semester prior to classes. Over the course of two semesters, each student will be expected to take at least one music class, one art class, and one movement class. With the exception of those in *advanced show choir, students will be have three different choices: a Monday/Wednesday choice, Tuesday/Thursday choice, and a Friday choir. Priority for advanced classes will be given to 6th graders and students based upon behavior, experience, and age. Students that do well in intermediate classes will be encouraged to move on to advanced classes.
In partnership with Cardinal Stage, under the direction of Shannon Starks, students will learn the fundamentals of theatrical drama. In the fall, students will perform a series of skits throughout the school, learn basic acting skills and engage in drama games. In the spring, the drama class will put on a musical for the entire student body and student families.
Taught by Aaron Comforty and Brandon McGhee, the Fairview Drum Core meets on Mondays and Wednesdays and takes beginners and advanced drummers. Students will learn a variety of drumming styles: Hip Hop, traditional, West African, Kenyan, and jazz. Every class begins with music literacy and will incorporate solo and ensemble performance, improvisation, as well as rote and note learning.
Taught by Nathan Dylan, students can take part in this class with little or lots of previous experience. They will learn how to accompany themselves as they sing with guitar chords and explore music literacy and performance. Students will play music that spans folk, rock and hip hop. Guitar students will perform in the fall and spring showcases.
Piano class, co-taught by Maggie Olivo and Elizabeth Clark, lets students work at their own piece, gving them opportunities to play for each other as they develop music literacy and performance skills. This group will perform a fall and spring recital for families and Fairview staff. Select pianists will also be featured on the stage at the fall and spring arts showcases.
4th-6th grade violinists will be split into three different groups: beginners (new to the violin), Intermezzo (4th or 5th graders able to play the A Major and D Major scales), and Vivace (6th graders and advanced 4th and 5th grader able to play low 2nd finger, full bows, and G Major Scale). Vivace members are invited based upon experience and behavior. All violinists will perform in fall and spring violin performances. Vivace violins perform, as asked, throughout the community. Both Intermezzo and Vivace will perform at the school's Trunk or Treat.

In this class, students will work with Dr. Reynolds as they explore the creation and theory of visual arts. They will work with a variety of mediums that may include: drawing, painting, collage, printing, and weaving.
In these classes, students will work with community artist, Andrew Huddleston to create pottery. Huddleston will teach an advanced ceramics class, focusing primarily on class. He will also teach an intermediate 3D class that will create art with clay, recyclable items, and metals.
Taught by Mr. Drew McKenzie, children will experience a variety of movement activities: dance, hip hop, yoga, aerobics, and endurance building routines.

Taught by Brennan and Ly Wilder, Fairview has two show choirs: Intermediate and Advanced. Intermediate, primarily 4th and 5th graders, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and consists of students that want to try out show choir, build further singing and/or dancing skills, or find it to work with their schedule. Advanced show choir requires multiple teachers' permssions, meets Monday/Wednesday/Friday, and serves as our performing group out in the community (Simon Mall, Evening of the Stars). Both show choirs will perform at the fall and spring show cases.
