Friends of the Mott Library Memorial Garden

FOREVER ROOTED IN OUR HEARTS

Fall of 2021, The Friends of the Mott Library commissioned the raised flower beds in front of the Mott Library as the Friends Memorial Garden. This space will be maintained by the Friends in remembrance of beloved members who supported and gave so much to this Foundation. If you would like to make a monetary donation, designated to the purchase of flowers for this space, reach out to Dawn Vert at friendsoflibrary@mcc.edu

Grayce Scholt 1926 - 2018

Grayce Scholt was an iconic writer, teacher, artist and long standing member of The Friends of the Mott Library. Grayce was hired as an English teacher at Mott in 1955 and worked until retirement in 1990. Poetry, however was her real passion and in 2008, she published her first full-length collection of poems, Bang! Go All the Porch Swings. Other works by Grayce include Fifteen Centuries of Children's Literature: An Annotated Chronology of British and American Works in Historical Context, East of Everywhere, and Night Song. Sadly, Grayce passed away in March of 2018 at the age of 92. A generous sum from her estate was donated to the Friends Foundation and will be used to create The Grayce Scholt Family Study Room: a parent/child work room in her honor. This room will house computer workstations, children's furniture, toys, games, and of course, books! It will be conveniently located on the first floor of the Charles Stewart Mott Library.

Margaret Ann "Peggy" Brown 1927 - 2019

Twenty seven years ago, former MCC Board of Trustees members donated funds for the Peggy Brown "Can Do" Collection. They charged the Friends of the Mott Library with the responsibility of administering those funds and the library staff with purchasing books that would benefit Secretary/Clerical employees. The collection honored Peggy Brown, long-time Board Secretary and MCC employee of nearly 30 years, for her "Can Do" attitude and spirit The Friends later decided to expand the scope of the subject matter to include books that would be helpful to any MCC student, faculty or staff member. Funding came to a close in 2018, and Margaret Ann 'Peggy' Brown passed away February 2019 at the age of 92. Peggy will be dearly missed, but our memory of her will live on here in the library through the hundreds of books acquired on her behalf.

James H. Drummond 1942 - 2020

Jim Drummond began his career at Flint Community Junior College (now Mott Community College) in 1968 as professor of English. He received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award and was twice recognized as a Master Teacher by the University of Texas Center on Community College Education. While teaching at MCC, he became a Consultant-Evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission and served on the accreditation teams at more than 40 colleges. Jim was an active member of The Friends of the Mott Library until 2018 and also served with a number of community groups, including the Genesee Literary Network and the Christ Enrichment Center board. After 37 years of service to the college, Jim retired in 2005 as Dean of Curriculum. In recognition of his outstanding leadership in community service and dedicated years of service, he was presented the Mott Community College 2018 Outstanding Retiree Award. Our Friend will always be remembered.

Kathleen A. Burton 1955 - 2021

Kathleen worked for many years as an Event Coordinator at Mott Community College and served on the Friends of the Mott Library Board from 2004—2017. She remained a member and supporter until her passing. Kathy will be greatly missed as evidenced by these heartfelt memories:

“Kathy was the go-to person for every event for years. She always had a smile or grin and the occasional sarcastic comment that went along with her magic touch.”

“She had the prettiest smile!”

“Kathy was always so kind and thorough and wonderful to work with.”

“I enjoyed working with Kathy on many events at Mott. She had a real spirit of excellence and was a pleasure to work with.”
