Every volcano has its own characteristics, yet the majority can be categorized into a few distinct types. The most recognized categories of volcanoes include cinder cones, composite volcanoes (also known as stratovolcanoes), and shield volcanoes.
• Broad, gently sloping cones built from fluid lava flows.
• Often have a low viscosity (runny) lava that spreads out widely.
• Examples: Mauna Loa in Hawaii, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
• Cone-shaped with steep slopes built from alternating layers of lava flows, ash, and other volcanic debris.
• Known for explosive eruptions due to their viscous magma.
• Examples: Mount Fuji in Japan, Mount St. Helens in the United States.
• Small, steep-sided cones built from ejected rock fragments (cinders) that accumulate around the vent.
• Often have a single eruption period and then become dormant.
• Examples: Paricutin in Mexico, Sunset Crater in Arizona.
