The Accelerated Reader program provides students with an opportunity to practice reading skills and increase reading fluency and comprehension.
Grades 3-8: Each nine weeks students are encouraged to earn points to reach or surpass their individualized reading goal by reading books and taking computerized tests on the books read. Individualized goals are based on 15 minutes of reading for 5 days a week (75 minutes each week) and students' reading abilities, based on the Star Reading test. Goals are then personalized for each reader by the librarian and teachers to meet individual needs and encourage free reading.
The number of points for each book has been determined by Renaissance Learning, the developer of the Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader is not mandatory but highly encouraged.
Students who meet their 9 weeks goal will earn a free dress day as well as a reward.
Grades 1-2: Students in 1st and 2nd grade will participate in Accelerated Reader at the teacher’s discretion.
