The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is committed to developing transportation improvements that balance transportation needs, safety, the environment, community concerns, and cost. As such, NJDOT is completing Preliminary Engineering for a replacement of the Route 50 Bridge over Cedar Swamp Creek. The project is in Upper Township, Cape May County, New Jersey. The project limits on Route 50 are from MP 2.50 to MP 3.20.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, this Public Information Center will be held virtually from July 12 to 18, 2022. PROPOSED PROJECT
Replacement of this bridge is recommended due to the poor condition of the existing foundation. The proposed design of the new bridge widens both the travel lanes and shoulders to meet current standards and adds a sidewalk next to the southbound lane. It also raises the bridge above the 100-year flood elevation.
The project will be constructed in two stages to ensure that the northbound lane remains open because it is an evacuation route for the shore communities. During stage 1 of construction, there will be a southbound detour using Tuckahoe Road and Tyler Road. This will be in place for approximately 15-18 months. During stage 2 of construction, the bridge will be open to travel in both directions.
The project corridor is surrounded by protected environmental resources. Impacts are expected to be minimal. The bridge will be designed following all State and Federal regulations to avoid and minimize impacts.
HISTORIC & CULTURAL RESOURCES
Federal regulations pertaining to the protection of historic properties, referred to as the Section 106 process, require the NJDOT to take into account the effect of proposed projects upon historic resources listed in, or eligible for listing in, the National Register of Historic Places. Information about the process is available in this document. NJDOT is required to solicit public input to assist it to carry out the Section 106 process. Historic preservation organizations, historical societies, and similar groups, or individuals with information about cultural resources (archaeological or architectural) in the project area are encouraged to attend the Public Information Center or comments may be submitted to:
