Parent Handbook

My name is Mrs. Tedrow, and I am looking forward to being your teacher this year. There are many fun things planned, and I can’t wait to experience them with all of you. Watching all of my students grow academically and socially is one of my favorite things, and I know that we are going to see this happen this year.
This will be my 25th year of teaching here at Mayville Elementary School, and I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else! I have taught many grades, and third grade is what I have taught the most.
I will be married for 21 years this November and have two girls, Emily (15) and Natalie (13). My husband and I both graduated from Michigan State University, and my family loves going to football games there every fall. We are animal lovers in my house, and my girls are hoping that we can add to our family by adopting a couple of kittens this year.
I believe that students do not learn in the same way or at the same rate. I am flexible with my teaching and am not afraid to try new things in order to help my students. I try to make learning fun by having students up and moving around the classroom.

Other Forms of Communication
Maroon Folders will come home daily with notes and assignments. Please go through this every night with your child.
Students will be completing a planner page daily where they will write what we worked on each day. Please initial each night so that I know that you have reviewed the planner page.
A weekly newsletter will come home every Monday or on the first school day of our week. Our newsletter will contain important dates, our special rotation, and what we are learning.
We will also use the Remind App for text communication. Information on how to sign up for the app will be provided.

School Rules
We follow the school wide rules in our classroom. Students will be receiving positive feedback for following the expectations such as special rewards and praise. If your child is repeatedly not following the CATS expectations, I will contact you so you are aware.

Students will be reviewing expectations in various locations in the building. We will be going over what behaviors should look like and what they will sound like.
We will be creating a classroom contract which will go along with our building expectations. Students will identify positive consequences and negative consequences of their behavior.
Positive consequences may be, but not limited to, receiving a CATS card, praise, a classroom reward, a note home, or a phone call home.
Negative consequences may be, but are not limited to, missing a portion of recess, RTC, minor or major referral, office visit with Mrs. Rayl or Mr. Smith, or a phone call home.
I try my best to create a safe and respectful learning environment for my students. I also try to have clear procedures and expectations to help curb negative behavior.
Specials
We will have four specials: Gym, Art, Computers, and Music. Please send gym shoes on gym days.

1:00-1:40 This will be our SEL/Library time on Fridays.
Assignment Policy
Students will be given ample time to finish assignments during class. Any work not completed will be sent home in the folder at the end of each day. It is your child’s responsibility to take home any and all necessary materials to complete the work and return it to school the next day in order to receive full credit. If your child is consistently not completing assignments in a timely manner, I will contact you.
Absences
Assignments will be collected in a folder for your child to complete when they have been absent. Your child will have the same number of days to turn in this work as were missed. For example, absent 2 days = turn in work in 2 days.

We will be using letter grades this year when grading assignments. Below is the percentage which correlates with the letter grade.

Water Bottles
Please make sure that your child’s water bottle is made from plastic, if possible, with a locking lid. Water is the only drink permitted in the classroom due to possible spills. Flavored water, juice, and pop will only be allowed during special occasions.
Snacks/Treats
Students will have an opportunity to have a healthy snack during the day.
We will be having celebrations in our classroom throughout the year. All treats should be store-bought and individually wrapped.
Birthdays
If your child would like to bring in a birthday treat, they may. All birthday treats must be store bought.
We have 23 students in our class. Please make sure that the treat you send in will provide enough for all students.
Students who have a birthday during the summer months may celebrate their birthday with the class on their ½ birthday. Also, if students birthdays are on the weekend or during a break, students may celebrate either the week before or the week after.
