Everything you need to know about Miss Reed’s First Grade!!
Welcome back to another school year! The following information is an outline of the basic rules and routines of our class. Please read all of the information, as it will give you a better understanding of what is to be expected in the coming months.
Beginning and End of the Day Procedures
The first bell will ring at 7:50 A.M. Students are allowed to enter the classroom at this time. School starts at 8:00 A.M. Your child will be marked tardy if they are not in the classroom at 8:00 A.M. Our school day ends at 3:00 P.M. At this time, students who are riding the bus will walk out to the busses with one of the first grade teachers. Car riders and walkers will walk to the cafeteria with one of the first grade teachers. If you are changing the way your child typically goes home, please write me a note or call the office so that I am aware of the change.
Classroom Rules
Our classroom rules are short and simple. We follow the CATS expectations.
Choose Wisely
Act Responsibly
Treat Others with Respect
Stay Safe
We will discuss what these rules mean and how they apply to our classroom. We will review these rules daily in the beginning of the school year.
Snack and Water Bottles
I have set aside 10 minutes each day for a snack and bathroom break. Please send in a small, nutritious snack (fruit, vegetables, crackers, dry cereal, pretzels, etc.) for your child. Please make sure to send your child with a water bottle that is marked with their name. Please no juice! We will not allow juice during snack time. Thank you for your help.
Daily Take Home Folders and Backpacks
Your child needs to bring a backpack to school each day along with their take home folder. This folder is used to communicate back and forth between home and school. Please sign the folder every night and return it with your child the following day. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns this is an excellent way to reach me. I check the folders every day, so feel free to put notes in the folder for me. This is an excellent way to contact me throughout the school year. Student work comes home with your child almost daily. Every Monday a classroom newsletter and any additional student work from the previous week will come home in the folder. Anything I want returned to school, I will put in the side of the folder marked return to school. Everything else is meant to stay at home.
Homework/Extra Practice
In first grade, we assign very little if any homework. The very best thing you can do for your child is to read with them or to them every night. Any paper on the return to school side of their take home folder should be considered homework. It will also be stamped homework, unless it is absent work. That work will just be found on the return to school side of their maroon folder.
Birthdays
If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday at school, you may send in a special treat for the class. This year the snack must be pre-packaged. For example, cupcakes and cookies that are not pre-packaged will not be allowed this year. We currently have 17 students in our classroom, however, this number will change throughout the school year. Please let me know you are sending in a treat, and I will give an accurate class count at that time. Summer birthdays can be celebrated at any time, as long as you let me know 1 day ahead of time.
Behavior Plan
We will be using a color chart system to monitor behavior. Please read the note attached to this packet, as it explains it in great detail. We also will be earning CATS cards all year, as a whole school. The CATS acronym stands for Choose Wisely, Act Responsibly, Treat Others With Respect, and Stay Safe. If your child is caught doing one of these behaviors, they will earn a CATS card. By earning these cards, they are eligible to attend a quarterly party to celebrate this accomplishment.
Contacting Me
If you have questions or concerns throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am available to meet before or after school. You can also contact me through notes, emails, and/or phone calls. I check my email and take home folders daily. A note in your child’s folder is a great way to contact me!
