Volleyball A new sport for ladies

There are accounts in the DeKalb County Heralds and DeKalb County Pilots of the ladies playing basketball in the 1910s and 20s. According to a Wolverine Howl, volleyball at MHS dates back as far as 1932.

WWII Puts Volleyball on Hold

With the entrance of the United States in World War II, rationing fuel became mandatory to support the war effort. This impacted the volleyball team of Maysville as they had no way of going to games. Until Germany and Japan were defeated, Maysville volleyball would be stuck at home.

Other Schools Play On

Other schools continued playing volleyball during the war. They played shortened schedules and only played nearby schools. In fact, the football team and basketball team for the boys saw little interruption with their schedules. They continued playing, just playing teams nearby to save on traveling.

War Ends, Volleyball resumes

World War II ended and fuel restrictions were lifted. That meant the volleyball team (the only team at Maysville that did not play their seasons during the war) could resume play.

1948 Teams Takes GRC Crown

The ladies were quite successful in their return to volleyball. In fact, they won the Grand River Conference title in 1948 and had many near-first place finishes in the years around 1948.

GRC Cancels Volleyball, Girls have no sports to play at MHS

In a somewhat surprising move, officials of the Grand River Conference elected to drop volleyball altogether and not replace it with basketball in 1954. Some schools were hoping that they would switch to girls basketball because that was what other conferences in the area were moving to. Officials decided there would be no female conference sports. This decision was devastating for the ladies of MHS because Maysville did not offer any sport for them while other GRC schools played nonconference schedules. The main reason for dropping volleyball was the unpredictability of game lengths, which led to very long nights because the boys would play basketball afterwards. Game lengths were unpredictable because rally scoring was not the adopted way of scoring volleyball games. Teams could only score a point if they were the ones serving. In fact, high schools nation-wide did not adopt rally scoring until 2003. Either way, multiple generations of Lady Wolverines never were able to show their volleyball prowess.

Volleyball makes a return

In a school board meeting in 2017 the board to bring back volleyball and create a baseball team. The intentions were to create a junior high team for the 2018 season. After two years they would have a high school team that would compete on the junior varsity level and after that they would compete at the varsity level. The first varsity volleyball team since 1954 competed during the 2022 season.
