OUR SCHOOL VISION
For our children to have the confidence, skills and attitude to become responsible citizens who can achieve their potential.
We did!
Here are some of the actions we have taken to address issues you shared with us at the Class Rep meeting.
👍Thank you for supporting our school!👍
Dear Families,
We are excited to share some changes to behaviour processes and support at school. In Term 3 we have been working alongside TASS (Team around the school support) inclusion and attendance advisors to analyse behaviour incidents and map trends.
We found from the data, pupil, parent and staff voice that behaviour overall is good at Maynards Green. Despite this, there is work to be done with individual pupils to ensure learning is never disrupted, and that high expectations of behaviour are maintained for all pupils.
Behaviour at Sporting Events
Sadly at the most recent interschool netball event, the behaviour of some Maynards Green pupils was not consistent with our school values. After reflecting on this as a staff, with support of the TASS team, we are putting in place a 2 strike system:
1st instance of unsportsmanlike conduct = Miss next competition.
2nd instance of unsportsmanlike conduct = Will not be put forward for tournaments for the rest of the school year.
We ask that as parents you reinforce the importance of behaviour in sport, and support us in applying these sanctions, which we hope, will not need to be invoked.
Behaviour policy consultation for parents
We are looking to make some changes to how behaviour is managed and communicated with parents. Please click the link below to read the proposed changes for Term 4, and to give your feedback.
Thank you for your continued support of our school this term. The Friends school disco was very well attended on Thursday night - thank you to everyone who gave time and effort to make this happen! It was wonderful to see all the children in their disco clothes, having a fantastic time.
As always, please speak with your child's teacher in the first instance if you have any questions or queries.
Have a fantastic half term!
Warm wishes,
Mrs Clark

Reminders
Parking
This is a friendly reminder to please park safely and considerately around the school.
Do not park on double yellow lines or zig-zag markings. These are in place to ensure clear visibility and safe passage for pedestrians, especially children.
Avoid parking on the pavement or blocking driveways. This can obstruct pedestrians and create hazards for residents.
Meet the Governors
Hello, my name is Helen and I became a co-opted governor at Maynards Green in 2022.
I currently have the responsibility for curriculum and data on the governing board. I like come into school regularly to see all of the wonderful learning going on across all year groups. I enjoy spending time with the teaching staff and children, listening to their enthusiasm for Maynards Green.
Where possible, I like to support the school in their enrichment activities, performances and assemblies, to give me a greater understanding of the school community.
I am local to the area, having lived in Horam and Heathfield for the last seven years, but within East Sussex most of my life. I work as a teacher at another school in the county, so being in schools really is my every day!
My two children attend Maynards Green School and I collect at the end of the week, please feel free to come and have a chat at any time.

Tuesday 11th February was Safer Internet Day, and this year's theme is "Too good to be True". The aim is to raise awareness of scams and what to do to protect yourself online if you think something may be a scam. Things to look out for are time pressured "offers", asking for personal information to access a better deal and, most importantly, ask yourself is it too good to be true - why would someone you don't know want to give you a bargain or unequal exchange of items in a game for example? It's all about being aware that things aren't always what they seem. The advice is to check with an adult before clicking on anything that seems too good to be true - it probably is!
As part of Safer Internet Day, Julie, our Safeguarding Governor, has asked us to collect your thoughts and ideas around Online Safety. This survey is anonymous and we look forward to knowing what we, as a school, do well and what areas of online safety you feel we need to improve. Please complete this short survey to support us with this.

This week we have started our outdoor learning with Mr Townsend. The children had the opportunity to learn how to be safe in the lessons. They also had to find things in the environment that were longer than their arm!
Every child will have the opportunity to take part and I know Group B are looking forward to their session next week.
We have also been learning about Space and famous astronauts. We have been watching videos of Chris Hadfield in the space station and seeing how he brushes his teeth. He swallows the toothpaste water - yuck! We will finish the term off by learning about Mae Jemison and Neil Armstrong.

In Year one this term we have been learning all about transport. We took a walk on the Cuckoo Trail, investigated the teachers cars, got to have a look in a motorhome and next week we get to see inside a police car!
We have learnt about the dad of all trains, George Stephenson, The Wright Brothers and the materials used to make all these mode of transport. We got to make our own modes of transport and tested them out. We have had a great time and are looking forward to next terms learning.
Make sure you check the weekly 'Tell me about...' on Tapestry for more details of what we have been up to each week and ideas of activities to try at home.

Year One Class Teachers
A big thank you to AMC Motorcaravans for coming in and showing us a motorhome!
We have continued with our polar bear books with the wonderful book The Polar Bear Son. We compared our hands to a polar bear paw, threw javelins to be Inuit hunters and built igloos out of ice cubes. In Maths, we have begun multiplication, creating equal groups to match different multiplication expressions. Geography has seen us travelling to Australia and Kenya over the last two lessons to build our knowledge of the continents of the world. We will be building our boats next week using recycled materials.

Year 3
In Year 3, we have been studying the artist Elizabeth St.Hilaire Nelson and marvelling at her collage work. We decided to have a go ourselves! First, we used the grid method to enlarge the picture by breaking it down into manageable pieces. Next, we practised colour mixing, thinking about primary, secondary and tertiary colours. The next step was painting our drawing. We had to look very carefully at the tones and shades of the photo to make it seem lifelike. Lastly, we used a variety of different papers to create a collage. This took resilience, patience and a lot of glue. We were very pleased with the results!
"Buttercup" by Elizabeth St.Hilaire Nelson
Year 4
This half term, we enjoyed two visits from experts teaching us about sustainable eating as well as water pollution. We also had a lovely session with our Young at Heart residents, making bird collages to celebrate the Big Garden Bird Watch.
We are continuing to learn about Europe. The children worked as geographers, analysing maps of Europe showing different information. They had to explain what the map told them about Europe but also asked some geographical questions like - is this true in every season? Is this still true today?
We also loved our new sticky knowledge task of hexagonal thinking. We completed this using our learning on Ancient Egyptians. The children had some key topic vocabulary and concepts presented on hexagons and they needed to make links between them, justifying their opinions as historians.
The children of Year 5 have been working hard in Maths to understand formal written methods in both multiplication and division. We have almost finished our English work which has been based on the book 'Rose Blanche' by Ian McEwan. Finally, the 'Big Dance' routine is coming along great and the children are getting very excited about their performance on 12th March.
Sporting News:
On Wednesday 5th February, children from years 5 &6 took part in the Heathfield Area Netball Tournament. There were two leagues,( A & B) and Maynards Green had a team in both. The Children playing in the B league came 3rd overall and the children playing in the A team came 1st overall, without losing a match. The children demonstrated great resilience and determination and are now looking forward to the next round on the 5th of March at Heathfield Community College.
As well as making good progress in our fractions topic in maths and enjoying our writing in English about The Barnabus Project, we have been enjoying our learning across the curriculum, too!
Our new history topic is The Maya. We have been learning where in the world the Mayans were based, what life was like for the people of the Mayan civilisation and all of the ways that they were ahead of their time to try to answer our big question.
In geography, we have been using Digimaps and atlases to discover more about South America! We are looking forward to learning even more through these topics into next term, too.

Year Six Class Teacher

Another reminder about this year's World Book Day. Please come to school in your cosy clothes, something you feel comfortable in to read. As part of the day's activity, please could each child bring a potato on the day - all will be revealed at home time!
Blue Peter Book Badge
Would you like one of these beautiful badges, designed by Quentin Blake?
The rules are simple:
Tell them about a book you have read and what you think about it. Maybe you liked the characters, or perhaps you enjoyed going on exciting adventures in faraway places.
Upload your illustration of a character or a scene from the story. This could be a drawing, painting or even digital artwork.
Let them know what other books and authors you have enjoyed reading and why.
Simply go to the link below and find out more. If you get a badge, let me know and we can celebrate in assembly .

In conjunction with World Book Day, we have the Scholastic Book Fair visiting us again. The fair will be here from Monday 3rd - Thursday 6th March 2025. This is not only a great opportunity to buy some new books but also provides the school with much-needed funds for books.
The new Nature Champions had their first session with our STEM ambassador Kim Twinn and took part in the RSPB Big School Birdwatch. Each group studied the school grounds and recorded down the birds seen.
They then headed back to the Cuckoo Lodge and drew their favourite bird they had seen.
The final count of birds viewed was:
Blackbird: 2
Blue Tit: 2
Robin: 2
Woodpigeon: 1
Crow: 1
Collared Doves: 2
They discussed ways in which as a school we could help encourage more birds to visit our school grounds so this might be an area we develop further and see if next time we have a higher amount of birds in our survey.
Kim was incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm of the children and is really looking forward to working with them all this year. Kim wanted to mention to the previous Nature Champions how much she enjoyed working with them and that she will miss them but to keep up the good work!
In my assembly this week I mentioned to the children about Winterwatch on BBC iPlayer. There are 4 episodes about British wildlife in Winter and is a great opportunity for the children to see Science in action and hear the vocabulary we use in lessons in a real life context.
I would recommend watching it with or before your children as some parts can reflect the harshness of nature and the predator/prey relationship so you can judge if some parts might be not suitable for your child.
If your child continues their learning at home and you want to share their development of science please feel free to email me at nalexander@maynardsgreen.org
