Maynards Green CP School
Dear Mums, Dads and Carers,
The children returned to school after the half term break in good spirits and ready to demonstrate how much they have learnt this year. Year 4 have been showing how well they know their multiplication tables by completing the National Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) and Year 1 have been showing off their reading skills during the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). Alongside this, all the children have also been undertaking their end of year assessments in reading, writing and maths, the results of which, along with the PSC and MTC will be shared with you at the end of the year via their reports.
However, Maynards Green is not all about academic achievement, and over the last two weeks, Dr Kim Twinn, our STEM ambassador from Wakehurst, has been in to work with our Nature Champions, Year 5 had an amazing adventure at Rye Watersports, Year 4 have been out on a litter picking welly walk, as part their John Muir project and Dr Tania Fitzgeorge-Balfour has been in to talk to the whole school about the ocean due to World Ocean Day. Our Reception class has been working hard to perfect their Class Assembly for next Thursday, which I am sure will be delightful, as always. All of the children have also been practicing for Sports Day, with some of our older pupils helping the Year 3 children to learn the events they will take part in during their first KS2 Sports Day.
In other news, we have finally received our road safety signs, which will be placed on our zig-zag lines from Monday and will help to keep our children much safer when crossing the road. The signs will be in place at drop off and pick up times and will be stored next to the school in the front garden. I would ask that you ensure that any children in your charge are reminded not to play with the signs, either on the school premises or more especially, in the road.
Finally, after the sad news last term of Aaron's tragic death, I would like to thank everyone who has supported the family and respected their privacy. Thank you.
Kind regards
Karen Cromwell
Headteacher
Gentle Reminders
Please be aware, from Monday morning, our new signs will be outside of school at drop off and pick up times.
Please remember that children need a full PE kit in school every day. Whilst they do have set days for PE, this can sometimes change and particularly with Sports Day approaching.

At the end of last term we had a delivery of caterpillars. After the half term the caterpillars had changed into butterflies and needed to be released into the wild. We let the butterflies go on the field.
We have also been learning about castles and the way that castles are built to keep the people inside safe. The children have been enjoying dressing up as knights and princesses.
Year One had a mysterious egg arrive in their classroom. The children discussed where the egg may have come from and what might be growing inside it.
The children also read the story 'How to look after your dinosaur' by Jason Cockcroft. They then used drama to retell the story. They were all very good at remembering the main parts of the story.
In Hedgehog's class we have been learning some exciting things! The children have enjoyed getting back into the swing of the learning and enjoying the start to our Farming STEMterprise project. So far we have started learning about how to work well together in our groups to produce a logo for our pizza companies.
The children also worked out where the producers and consumers were in the food chains. This week they have just planted parts of the ingredients needed for when they make their pizzas. The aim of this is for them to begin to learn where food comes from and how we can produce some of this ourselves. Year 2 are looking forward to completing new lessons each week on the STEMterprise, especially when they get to make their pizzas!
Year 3
Chocolate!
It's been a busy couple of weeks in Year 3. We have started our learning about where our food comes from and how it reaches our plates. On Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Phillips came to talk to the class about chocolate. We learnt where it comes from, how it is processed and how it reaches us. The best bit was when we got to taste lots of different types of chocolate from different parts of the world, namely Madagascar, South America, Africa and Indonesia. We were all surprised by how different they tasted from one another and everyone (including me) agreed that it was, without question, the best day of school ever! I would like to extend a bit thank you to Mrs. Phillips for taking the time to come and talk to us; we had the best time ever!
Year 4
We had a very busy start of Term 6 in Year 4! We began the 'Explore' part of our John Muir Award. This involved enjoying our local area in a variety of way: we took photos, mapped our walks, discovered new species of plants that have bloomed in the warmer weather and created sound maps. Our favourite, however, was taking our shoes and socks of and exploring the sensation of walking barefoot on mud and grass in our local grassland as well as our school field!
The children also completed their Multiplication Tables Check. We are very proud of their determination and resilience in learning their tables throughout their school journey as well their courage on the day of their test - we could not be prouder of all you have achieved!
As a Fantastic Finish to our Stone Age topic we held a class debate to establish which period of prehistory was the best to live in. We all took turns speaking, outlining our reasons for our period being the best. We considred homes, tools and food as well as quality of life in general - this was a lot of fun and generated interesting discussion.
Year 5 have had a busy start to term 6. In the first week they joined up with Year 6 pupils to talk about life in Year 6. The older children shared their knowledge on how to tackle some of the challenges they might face and discussed the different responsibilities involved in being a Year 6 pupil. The Year 5 children found the experience extremely useful.
Rye Watersports
What a fantastic day Year 5 had at the Rye Watersports Centre last Wednesday. They experienced a number of exciting watersports such as paddle boarding, dinghy sailing and wind surfing. All the children took part and were clearly up for the challenge of learning new skills. They did however spend as much time in the water, as you could imagine, as they did on the sailing vessels provided. Great fun was had by all. Well done Year 5 for embracing the whole experience and for enjoying every minute of the time we spent there.
One of my key aims for Science at Maynards Green is to try as get as many experts in to help inspire the children about the benefits of studying science and having a greater understanding of the world around them.
The Nature Champions had a session with Dr Kim Twinn, our STEM Ambassador from Wakehurt, where they examined and sorted different types of seeds and then planted out some seeds in our raised bed area. More willdflowers, linseeds and sunflowers should hopefully be growing in the beds soon!
Kim was very impressed with the children and said they were "superstars for sorting and sowing seeds to help the pollnators."
I look forward to giving you updates on the growth in the bed in the next few weeks.... fingers crossed!
We have also been very lucky enough to have a second expert in this term when Dr Tania Fitzgeorge-Balfour who is not only a parent in the school but also a Marine Biologist.
She presented an assembly to help us mark World Oceans Day. She spoke about the importance of the oceans and also the role a Marine Biologist has in studying and learning more about the oceans. Teachers and children alike were inspired by her talk and she gave a great insight into this important habitiat.
I spoke to the children about how they had inspired me to take part in a Beach Clean on Eastbourne beach at the weekend. Organised by Plastic Free Eastbourne. They run beach cleans every 2nd Sunday of the month. Details can be found by visiting their website https://www.plasticfreeeastbourne.co.uk/index.html
If you have a background or a job linked to an area of science then please do email me to see if we can arrange a time for you to come in and talk to the children and inspire them further!

Between the 10th and 14th June we celebrate British Nutrition Foundation Healthy Eating Week. Our focus was 'Just One More' - increasing our regular portion of vegetables by one.
We were all offered one more portion of vegetables with our school dinners and were encourages to bring some extra veg with our packed lunches too. In class, we completed lots of fun activities to learn about the importance of a healthy, balanced diet and exercise.
Furthermore, throughout Term 6, each class is undertaking the Farming STEMterprise project. Each class' project includes learning about the principles of healthy eating as well. To further enthuse the children about the healthy eating, we have organised exciting workshops in partnership with our catering company, Chartwells. A certified nutritionist will be delivering those to each year group over the next few weeks, giving children an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of what healthy eating means and how to put it into practice. We are truly hoping that, in line with out school values an motto, the children will develop knowledge, skills and attitude to make responsible choices when it comes to their diet and exercise.
As you may know, we are going through the process of achieving a Healthy Schools Status. Our Whole School Food Policy has been drafted and we would love to hear your views. The Policy can be found here . If you have any comments or suggestions, please e-mail the school office.
