Dear Families,
Welcome to our final newsletter of 2024!
Christmas performances
This week we have had the joy of our YR/1 Nativity Baarmy Bethlehem, and the Y2/3 Christmas Show Lights, Camel, Action 2 - "The Sequin."
Thank you for your generosity with donations. The money you give will go towards our bank of costumes, paying for scripts and music rights and means we can continue to put on such fantastic productions every year! You can see how much the children enjoy it, and the impact on developing oracy skills and confidence is exponential. The Y4,5,6 Carol Concerts are next week on Tuesday 17th December at 9am and 2pm. I hope to see many of you there.
Term 2 Parent Feedback
There is still time to give your feedback on Terms 1 and 2! Thank you to those who have taken the time to complete the feedback survey. It is hugely important for us to have your input, and this is an opportunity for you to share successes, thanks, concerns or suggestions.
Feedback from parents and families is vital to enable us to continually evaluate and improve our school.
The survey will close on Friday 20th December.

Behaviour update
From the DFE publication Behaviour in Schools Feb 24 Maintaining a positive culture requires constant work and schools should positively reinforce the behaviour which reflects the values of the school and prepares pupils to engage in their learning.
Following a review of Pupil Voice in Term 2, it was clear that many pupils who consistently demonstrate our school values and good behaviour for learning felt they were not "seen". As a team, we feel that recognition of these pupils is important.
I am pleased to share with you a new recognition of good behaviour - Hot Chocolate with the Headteacher.
Pupils who consistently show the school values through their behaviour over a sustained period of time are invited to the Headteacher's office to enjoy a drink and a chat at the hot chocolate bar! This will take place on a termly basis.

Pain Relief in school
Please be aware that any pain relief medication your child needs to take during school hours must be brought in and taken home on the same day.
All pain relief medication will be sent home on the last day of this term.
A reminder that if your child experiences vomiting or diarrhea, they should stay home from school for a full 48 hours after their symptoms subside to prevent illness spreading to others.
It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school when they are unwell.
Follow this advice on when to keep your child home.

Meet our Governors
Hello everyone, my name is Julie and I became a co-opted governor at Maynards Green in 2023.
I am currently the Co-Chair, with specific responsibility for Safe-guarding, Curriculum and Data and the Training and development of Governors.
I meet each term with Mrs Townsend to ensure that the Safeguarding Policy and Procedures are being followed and provide support when needed.
I was recently involved with an external review of Safeguarding in the school by ESCC, and I am pleased to say we had a very positive outcome.
I enjoy coming into school and helping with the enrichment afternoons and attending school events, seeing first-hand how the school operates and meeting the children.
I have lived and worked in the area for more than 30 years and ran my own dental practice. I have also been involved with the teaching and assessing of adults working the social care sector.
I am Chairman of Age Concern Heathfield & District and run a luncheon club for the elderly.
Two of my grandchildren attend Maynards Green School and I collect some afternoons, please feel free to come and have a chat, if you are curious about the role of a Governor, we do have a vacancy on the Board!
This week the children were amazing in their first Nativity! We had some dancing sheep, inn keepers that were finding it difficult to find room and some very sparkly angels. I am sure you will agree that the class tried really hard and were very brave getting up on the stage in front of so many people.
This term we have also been learning about nocturnal animals and how some animals hibinate for the winter. We have found information about hedgehogs and have even made our own hedgehogs using materials in the classroom. Can you spot the spikes on Isabella's playdough hedgehog?
Mrs Green
Reception Class teacher
This term we have been practicing really hard to learn our lines and songs for our nativity 'Baarmy Bethlehem'. Many of you came to see all the children's hard and we think they did an amazing job. We really enjoyed working with Reception and Mrs Green again! We hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did.
Mrs Osborn and Miss Phillips
Year One Class Teachers
We have had an exciting and busy couple of weeks. We enjoyed "No pens day", practised and performed our Nativity production of "Lights, Camel, Action 2 - the sequin". In English we have been enjoying "Stuck" by Oliver Jeffers. We loved how he threw everything in the tree - we made our own kites, then threw our own shoes, just to see what it was like! We have been working on addition and subtraction in Maths. In RE, we have been learning why does Christmas matter to Christians, following a Nativity trail around the playground. and had some amazing discussions - did Jesus get any Christmas presents?
Mrs Boorer
Year Two Class Teacher
Year 3
This week saw the much anticipated Year 2 and 3 Christmas performance. The children had all worked incredibly hard learning lines and dances, lyrics and tunes. We really enjoyed working together to produce the show; we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
We have also started our Geography topic on Volcanoes; we are very excited and can't wait to learn more.
Year 4
In year 4 we are continuing to study Ancient Egypt. We sculpted our canopic jars, using scoring to attach elements to our sculpture.
We also finished writing a fantastic set of instructions from Marcy from Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx to help her rescue her father. Within our instructions, our focus was on cause and effect conjunctions to explain clearly the effect of the action on the obstacle Marcy needed to overcome.
Year 5 have been Learning all about Pablo Picasso in art. We researched his background and took a look at some of his amazing artwork. The children then watched a tutorial on how to create a Picasso style face. Below are a couple of wonderful examples (inspired by Picasso) that the children in Year 5 produced.
In other areas of learning, Year 5 have been working hard to understand fractions. We have been looking at equivalent fractions, improper fractions, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa. It has been a lot to take on board, but the children have shown great determination and resilience.
Year 6 walked down to Oaklands Court of Horam this afternoon to sing Christmas songs to the residents. They also handed out the personalised Christmas cards that Year 5 had created for them.
The children sang beautifully and behaved impeccably.
We are very proud of them for representing our school so well!
What a busy Term 2 it's been in Year 6!
We have enjoyed our learning across the curriculum this term.
In English, we have continued with our 'Dragons' topic. We created our own dragons and wrote descriptions; published our non-chronological reports about dragons and have written stories about dragon training!
In maths, we have continued to work on our 'fast track passes' and applying the multiplication and division facts to new concepts.
Miss Francis
Year Six Class Teacher
Year 3 - worked in pairs to build famous London landmarks from various construction materials.
English News - No Pens Day
This year, we all had a lot of fun on No Pens Day. Everyone brought in their special item to talk about in class and also participated in other verbal and practical activities. Here are a small selection of those activities.
Year 1 "wrote" a popcorn story (a storytelling game where players take turns adding to a story).
Year 4 communicated via visual morse code and expanded their vocabulary by playing Taboo.
Year 1
We have been learning about how materials have different properties and we played a game where we predicted if an object would float or sink in water. The children explained how the properties of the material had an effect on this.
Year 2
We have been learning if different materials can change shape using forces such as squash, twist, stretch and bend. The children carried out comparative testing of different materials and recorded their results in tables.
Year 3
Building on our knowledge of nutrition we have been learning about the skeletons of various different animals. The children have been classifying and sorting animals based on their skeletons and also building their own model of a human endoskeleton.
Year 4
We have been learning how states of matter change in different temperatures and used this knowledge in a collaborative diagram of The Water Cycle. They identified the different processes involved including evaporation, transpiration, condensation and precipitation.
Year 5
We have continued to learn about Earth and space and look at how ideas of the solar system have changed over time with advanced technology and the exploration of space. The children have drawn the solar system and made a pocket one based on relative distances worked out.
Year 6
Our light topic has developed to discuss what affects the length of shadows detailed scientific diagrams have been drawn. We have also had discussions about the transparency of objects and the type of shadows formed.
If they have continued their learning at home I'd love hear about it!
