Maynards Green CP School
Dear Mums, Dads and Carers,
Welcome back to the start of another term. I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter Break spending time with friends and family and were able to make the most of the few dry days we did have to get out and about.
The Summer Term is always exciting as well as being extremely busy! Apart from the Y6 SATs and the Multiplication and Phonics checks, this is the time when we open the swimming pool. The children have now all enjoyed their first swimming lessons and I look forward to seeing the progress that they make between now and the end of the academic year. Year 5 have just completed their Bikeability training and I am delighted to say that they all passed - Well done Year 5! Still to come we have: Sports Day, the Mini Olympics inter schools competition for years 5 and 6, the Year 4 residential to Deer Leap Park, the HASP swimming Gala and school trips to Wakehurst Place, Herstmonceux Science Centre and Rye Water Sports!
Some of you will be aware, particularly parents with children in Years 1 & 2, that we have had a few staffing changes recently. Miss Turner left Year 1 just before Easter to commence her maternity leave and I am delighted to share the news that she and her husband now have a beautiful baby girl, Noa. I am sure you will join with me in sending congratulations to them all. Mrs Mamoany is now teaching Year 1, alongside Mrs Jones, who will be teaching them on Fridays. After the rather unexpected departure of Miss McCaul in Year 2, we have now been joined by Mrs Franco, who will teaching them Monday to Thursday (Mrs Townsend will continue to teach on Fridays). Finally, I am sure there will be opportunities in the coming months for you to meet Mrs Clark, following her appointment as my successor, as she will be popping in from time to time to get to know the children and the school before she formally takes up her post in September.
A final plea for you to show some consideration when parking in the area surrounding the school. We had a phone call from a rather distressed local resident who was upset that the ambulance that had been called for her mother was delayed because it was unable to access the house via Tubwell Lane due to parked cars and needed to take an alternative and more time consuming route.
Kind regards
Karen Cromwell

Gentle Reminders
Please check the hamper for lost items and if you have named your children's belongings and you stand every chance of getting them back. If not, they will be disposed of. We will be disposing of all unclaimed items on Friday 3rd May.
Just a reminder that if you find yourself locked in the playground after drop off, in the interests of safeguarding all our children, please seek out an adult to walk you through to the school office.
As the weather gets hotter (hopefully!) please remember to provide a named water bottle for your child and for sunny days, sunscreen and a hat.

As some of you may remember from previous newsletters, we have been working towards achieving the United Against Bullying Award this year. I am delighted to announce that we have been awarding the United Against Bullying BRONZE School status! This is not an easy award programme and we are incredibly proud of what the children and staff have achieved. For context, 296 schools completed the programme with 11% achieving Gold, 24% Silver, and 55% Bronze.
What has changed:
an updated Anti-Bullying policy
a team of Antibullying champions
the introduction of the Odd Socks Box
further awareness of bullying
This week we went on a trip to Heathfield library. We caught the bus from outside the school and then walked along the high street to the library. We had a great time looking at the books and learning about all the activities that libraries offer. We then all got a chance to borrow a book to share at home.
As a class teacher I could not have been prouder of the children and the way they behaved and this was also felt by the librarian who sent an email to say that the children did a wonderful job of representing the school. Well done Dormice Class!
This term our key text is 'The Pirates Next Door' by Jonny Duddle. Year One have come official pirates with their own pirate names and pirate licences. The children have created wanted posters and have even learnt a pirate sea Shanty.
The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch
Year 2 have been exploring 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' by Ronda and David Armitage. They have looked at the setting of the story and the different characters. Next week the children will be rewriting the story and may even get a chance to extend the story of the scavenging seagulls even further.
It has also been so lovely to see all the children embrace the swimming lessons this term!
Year 3
This term, we have been continuing our learning about the Anglo Saxons. In order to understand more about their daily lives, we undertook some cooking using ingredients they would have used, namely, oat and apple cakes. We carefully weighed and mixed the ingredients, before baking them in the (not-quite-so-authentic) oven.
We also made butter from cream. This was quite exhausting but very satisfying when it finally went "thump!"
A big thank you to our 2 parent helpers too - we couldn't have managed without you!
Year 4
Year 4 started the term with a Stone Age/Iron Age themed welly walk led by Rachel from the High Weald Heroes. We explored the local area and though about how this has changed since the prehistoric times, particularly in light of the high presence of the iron ore in the High Weald. We thought about the prehistoric way of life and foraging and hunting.
We also created our own artwork, combining painting and stitching. This was inspired by the work of Hannah Rae and Alice Kettle. We thought about how we can use different materials to make art and make marks to show movement and texture in the landscapes.
Year 5 have had a very active start to the new term with both swimming and Bikeability starting on the first day back. Bikeability was a great success. All the children in Year 5 achieved the level 2 award an all areas, and were praised by the local community, who witnessed the children cycling through Horam, on how focused and sensible they all were. The children are now level 2 trained, to safely navigate busy roads on a bike. Well done Yea 5!

Sporting News
Children from Years 5 & 6, took part in the Heathfield Area Tag Rugby Tournament at Heathfield Community College on 24th April. Both teams performed well and showed great resilience and competitive spirit. Team A drew first place with Mayfield, but lost out to goal difference. It was great to see some old faces from Maynards Green refereering at the tournament and supporting the younger generation.
Since we didn't have Enrichment on the first Friday back, we spent the whole afternoon making our Mayan pottery designs that we sketched last term come to life. Not only was it lovely and therapeutic, we did a LOT of learning. We could choose between 3 different skills for making a pot out of clay: pinching, coiling, and slabbing. Once we had finished, we carefully carved our designs in and evaluated them.
In our maths lessons, we have continued to cement our knowledge and understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages (FDP). We made a huge number line on the counting stick, which we keep adding to, to show equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages between 0 and 1. Obviously, we didn't stop there! We counted past 0 in decimals and found some equivalent fractions and percentages. Year 6 are amazing mathematicians!
It's that time of year again where we look forward to the Summer Reading Challenge! This year, the theme is Marvellous Makers, which aims to celebrate creativity.
The challenge runs from The Challenge will begin in libraries on Saturday 6th July and end on Saturday 7th September.
To take part in the Challenge children need to read six books of their choice that they have borrowed from the library or downloaded from our e-book library over the summer holidays. They are given rewards for each book they read and a certificate and medal if they manage to complete the Challenge.
The Challenge is for all children, whatever their reading ability. Children who are not reading independently can share their books with a family member or friend, or they might prefer to listen to audio books.
A new term brings new Science topics and lots of learning has been happening already!
Year 1
Our topic is plants so we have started the term by planting a range of seed to see what might grow!
Year 2
We have started our Lifecycles topic by looking at the human lifecycle and children brought in their baby and toddler photos to share with their class mates, we had fun trying to work out who they grew into!
Year 3
Another class starting the term by planting some seeds for their Plant topic. This time they decided to invesitgate how different conditions would effect plant growth. Some of these are rather thirsty seeds while others are locked away in a dark cupboard!
Year 4
Electricity is on the topic list for Year 4 this term and we have started to make some simple circuits! We have also talked about how to be safe around electricity.
Year 5
We are comparing different animal lifecycles in Year 5 this term. We began by looking at the different mammal lifecycles and have moved on to start investigating the similarities and differences between other types of animal.
Year 6
It's all about the Heart and Circulatory System in Year 6 and we have started by making our own models of hearts!
Finally, I wanted to say a big thank you to those who took part in the Big Plastic Count last term.
These were the results from the forms we submitted. It was an interesting exercise and hopefully will go some way to helping the organisers persuade those that make all the plastic packaging to ensure more can be recycled in the future.
