Literacy Pilot at Green Meadow and Fowler School

During the 2021-2022 school year, the Green Meadow and Fowler Schools have been exploring literacy programs.

A Literacy Curriculum review process began in 2018 but was postponed and reconvened in September 2020. A Literacy Committee representing educators PK-5 met throughout the 2020 school year to research and evaluate a variety of curriculum materials.

Green Meadow and Fowler Schools piloted Wit and Wisdom in Fall, 2021. Both schools determined that it was not a proper educational match for our community.

Fowler school piloted Amplify's Core Knowledge Language Arts in Grades 4 and 5. Through this pilot work, it was determined that the CKLA curriculum would be a good fit for Grades 3-5.

After further review, Green Meadow determined that no one program will meet the needs of our youngest learners. Green Meadow has created a Comprehensive Literacy Plan that meets the Massachusetts Department of Education Core Literacy Program.

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education states:

The core literacy block includes three main components: Foundational Skills, Engaging with Complex Text, and Writing. Oral Language is the bedrock, and differentiated instruction happens throughout.

Foundational Skills-The core literacy block includes systematic instruction with active practice in foundational skills every day in grades PreK–5.

Engaging with Complex Text- The core literacy block includes reading or listening to authentic and meaningful texts every day in grades PreK–5.

Writing-The core literacy block includes systematic writing instruction with active practice every day in grades PreK–5.

All three core components can include differentiated instruction, such as small group instruction, independent, or center-based activities, depending on student needs.
