Hello! I'm Brittany Reeser, Math Department Chair at Mayfield Junior School. This is my third year at MJS and my eighteenth in math education.
Mayfield is home for me in more ways than one. I was a student here in 7th and 8th grade, then went on to Mayfield Senior School. Coming back has been a full-circle experience.
Here's something I tell students often: I didn't always love math, and for a long time I didn't think I was good at it. That changed slowly. By the time I was in college, I realized the thing standing in my way was never ability. What stood in my way was the belief that math meant understanding procedures quickly and getting to the answer first. It doesn't. Math is about curiosity, problem solving, and making sense of things together. Every student can find a way in, and helping them find it is the best part of my job.

Serve as Department Chair, supporting our teachers and families through our rollout of California Reveal Math
I began my career teaching high school math — Algebra 1 through AP Calculus — and was named California Charter School Teacher of the Year in 2014. I moved into coaching middle school teachers in 2015 and elementary teachers in 2018, and in 2019 became Director of Mathematics, where I led three schools through a curriculum transition. I earned my bachelor's in mathematics, my teaching credential, my master's in teaching mathematics, and a certificate in teacher leadership, all at Loyola Marymount University.
Outside of school, I'm a mom to a son who is very sure he already knows all of his math facts.
If you have a question about your student's math journey, please reach out. I'd love to hear from you.
