November 2023

A message from Mrs Merritt

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our November newsletter. It has been another busy month of learning at Maybury!

Year 5 took part in an interactive history workshop, which is linked to their Viking topic. The workshop was delivered by History expert Mr Dilly and was designed to provide a hands-on learning experience for the children. Through this workshop,  children had the chance to explore various aspects of Viking history and culture in an engaging and interactive manner. As a result, the children produced some amazing stories about Beowulf  as part of this topic.

Starfish class went on a trip to Little Street, a role play village, and had a wonderful time. It was a brilliant opportunity for them to engage in imaginative play and further develop their social and communication skills.

This term we have been working to enrich our Religious Education (RE) curriculum in line with the new Surrey RE syllabus. It is crucial for our children to learn about different religions, their traditions, practices, and beliefs. By doing so, we aim to foster an atmosphere of respect, tolerance, and understanding among our diverse community.

Last week we had a Phonics audit by an external consultant, who was thrilled to see the high quality of phonics sessions being delivered. We firmly believe that our daily phonics sessions are key to developing strong reading and writing skills. Therefore, I urge you to ensure that your child reads every day at home, which will greatly support their progress.

In order to promote a love of reading, our Key Stage 2 children have been benefiting from visits to Woking library. The library trips have allowed them to explore a wide range of books and develop their reading comprehension skills. We encourage you to support and nurture your child's love of reading by making regular visits to the library or reading together as a family. Don’t forget we also open our school library to parents and children after school on Tuesdays, please see Mrs Hussain for more information.

I would also like to express our gratitude for your generous donations towards the Happy Bags collection, which raised £101.20.

Lastly, I would like to remind you about the importance of regular school attendance. We firmly believe that attending school every day lays the foundation for future success. This year we are continuing with our termly attendance rewards. The class with the highest attendance will be treated to a magic show at the end of term. Below, you can find the current attendance results. I kindly request your support in ensuring your child attends school every day. Together, let's strive for excellent attendance and maximized learning opportunities.

We would also like to thank parents for completing our recent parent Questionnaire. We are so pleased that 100% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that “their child is safe and happy at school.” We have robust policies systems in place to ensure that our children are safe and happy at Maybury.

In other news, we are delighted to welcome Mrs Wharton to our teaching team in Year 4. She will be teaching on Wednesdays to Fridays and is a fantastic addition to our school community.

Attendance from 4th September to 30th November 2023

Remember it is vital that your child comes to school every day unless they are unwell, there is some useful guidance from the NHS about when you should or shouldn't send your child to school which can be found here   https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/ .  Please see chart below that shows attendance for this term so far for each class:

Early Years Foundation Stage Update

Rainbow Fish

What a busy yet fun month for our lovely children at Rainbow fish.

We had an exciting visit to the Life Space tent. The children learnt all about how to take care of their bodies with help from Harold the Giraffe. The children were so excited to join in and they really enjoyed it! We were so proud of how well-behaved and how well the children sat whilst in the Life Space tent!

We have now started to give library books to children to take home on Friday’s. Please remember to return the library books to school the following Friday. Thank you.

Starfish

It has been a very busy month for Starfish Class.  The children have been lucky to go on their first school trip, to Little Street .

The children had lots of fun at Little Street.  They got to dress up and pretend to be lots of different people from our community.  The children were so well-behaved, and we were so very proud of them all.  The staff at Little Street also commented on how well-behaved our children were.  They were great ambassadors for our school.

Starfish have been learning about the different stages of  a human life and have ordered the human timeline from baby to elderly.  They have been exploring what they can do now they are a child compared to what they could do as a baby.

Key Stage 1 Update

Seahorses

At the start of November Seahorses got to visit the life space where they met Harold the Giraffe. They learnt all about different food groups and how much you should eat of each group. They also learnt about how to take care of themselves and how to be a good friend.

Seahorses have been busy learning about  Space in our history lessons. They loved learning about all the planets in our solar system and the history of space travel.

In our Science lessons we are learning about the different seasons and what the weather is like in the Autumn and Winter. The children collected signs of Autumn and made up their own Autumn weather forecast in pairs.

This week we have been looking at shapes in our Maths lessons. We have been sorting shapes by their properties and learning to name both 2D and 3D shapes. We have also been making models and finding out which 3D shapes stack and which ones don't!

This half term in Design Technology we are going to be making a moving picture with mechanisms. The children like looking at pop up books and seeing how they work. They have already explored how to make different mechanisms and have completed their designs ready to start making in the next couple of weeks.

Jellyfish

This month, Jellyfish have been doing lots of exciting learning in all of our subjects. We were visited by the Life Space and had to help Harold the Giraffe solve some of his friendship problems. We learnt all about what our body needs to stay healthy and about the different organs that help us stay healthy too.

In DT, we are looking at how wheels and axles work. We have been exploring different vehicles and how their features help them do specific jobs. We experimented with different resources to make our own wheels and axles and learnt what works well and what doesn’t. Then we designed our own vehicle and are looking forward to making them!

For maths, we have been learning about multiplication, We started by making equal groups of resources and then arranging them neatly so they are easier to count. We talked about multiplication as ‘groups of’ and then as repeated addition sentences. Once we understood these well, we moved onto using the multiplication symbol in our number sentences.

We were also really lucky to have been able to visit Woking library and explore their amazing children’s section!

Key Stage 2 Update

Manta Rays

In Science, we are learning about Forces and Magnets.  Last week we carried out an investigation to see if friction affects the distance a toy car will travel down a ramp.  The children made their predictions and then tested different surfaces to explore their ideas and come to a conclusion.  This week the children were exploring magnetic and non-magnetic materials and how not all metals are magnetic.  They learnt about different types of magnets and carried out an investigation to see which  magnets are the strongest and can pick up the most paper clips.  The results were very different for each group!

In DT, we are working towards making our own pneumatic monsters using syringes and plastic tubing.  The children enjoyed exploring a range of pneumatic toys and looked at how they work.  It was great fun launching rockets, releasing cars and racing horses!   The children are now busy planning and designing their own monsters, incorporating a pneumatic system and are really excited to make them in a couple of weeks.

In Literacy, we have been looking at the story ‘Dolphin Boy’.  It is a lovely story about a boy who finds a dolphin stranded on a beach and how they become friends.  The children have been using ideas from the story to plan and write their own story with their own choice of setting, animal and main character.  We have been focusing on using fronted adverbials and adjectives to add detail and excitement to our story writing, and the children have written some wonderful stories!

In PE, we are doing football and hockey.  The children really enjoy their weekly football lessons with Miss Young and are developing lots of great skills in both sports.

In History, we are continuing to learn about the Ancient Egyptians.  We have been learning about why the Egyptians mummified bodies and the mummification process, and the children have used a similar process to mummify some tomatoes!  We are hoping they will be preserved well and not rot!

Angelfish

It has been a busy month in Angelfish class. We have welcomed our new teacher Mrs Wharton who is having an amazing time teaching at Maybury! We are about to begin a new class text of ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’.

In Science, we have been investigating states of matter by learning more about solids, liquids and gasses.

In DT , we have been researching marble runs and will soon be creating and evaluating our own. This has been great fun and we have learnt a lot about structures.

Maths lessons have focussed on measure this month. We can now convert between different units and we have improved our knowledge of area and perimeter.

We enjoyed an amazing workshop this month. Life Space is an engaging way to learn about keeping your mind and body healthy. We discussed what makes us different and how we are all unique.

Sea Turtles

This month Sea Turtles have been very busy with their DT project. We are making autumnal soup using vegetables which are in season. We have learned all about seasonality and where our food comes from. We have also looked at the eat well guides so we can make our soup as nutritious as possible!  Last week we tried different soups which were already on the market before designing our own. This week we have been learning how to chop, mash, grate and peel our vegetables.

In maths we have been learning all about fractions, we have found it quite tricky to convert our fractions, we have been playing lots of games to help us with this so we can apply this to other areas of fraction such as ordering, adding and subtracting.

In science we have been learning about properties and changes of materials. This week we create an experiment to see which metals conducted electricity to get the brightest bulb. We remembered how to make our circuits from year 4.

As part of our ongoing Invaders and Settlers history topic, we have a visit from Mr Dilly who performed an engaging workshop where we learned all about the Vikings and how they raided England. We also acted out the legend of Beowulf, the children all joined in and this also helped us with our story writing in literacy!

Dolphins

This has been a very busy month for the Dolphins. We finished our first class text and now have our new one ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty.  It is based on a young boy Jim Jarvis and his life in the Victorian times. We have been focusing our Literacy learning around this text and producing different pieces of writing about Jim and his life.

This month we also had one of our favourite workshops; we visited the Life space tent in the hall with one of our favourite visitors, Mark. He came to talk to the children about decisions we make in life and how to make sure we make decisions that are best for us and how we can cope with peer pressure. We then watched a video about Jack who was facing some tough decisions when his friends try to pressure him into breaking rules. We talked about how Jack and his friends could speak out against their friends and work as a united front.

We also talked about what our body needs to stay healthy including how our organs work and we even learnt some fun facts! We also learnt about drugs and the difference between legal and illegal drugs and how they can affect your body.

In science, we have started a new topic ‘Evolution and Inheritance’ and we have been looking at maternal and paternal inherited characteristics. The children produced some great homework for this!

In DT, we have started a new project about making a healthy packed lunch for a friend in the class. The children will be setting questionnaires to find out what their friend wants in their lunch. They will also be writing a shopping list for items they will need to bring in for our making sessions in a couple of weeks. Once they have been completed the children will be getting feedback to see if they fulfilled their brief.

Anti Bullying

Believe.Acheive.Succeed

Bullying can mean many different things to different people. These actions can be described as bullying if they happen often and are done on purpose. We are very lucky at Maybury, we follow our school rule of being kind so people don’t bully. We learn about bullying in Learning for Life so we know what to do if we are bullied.

Here are some examples of bullying behaviour:

These things can happen at school or at home, but they can also happen online and on social networks. If you are being bullied, or someone you know is telling you that they are being bullied, always tell a trusted adult and they will help.

School Council

This half term the school council have been working with Mrs Melling to look at our playground and way in which we can make it better. We met to discuss any new equipment we would like to see in our playground and devised a questionnaire to ask the children in our classes so that everybody gets a say. Some ideas we came up with were: shelter building, dressing up, toy cars and musical walls. We are going to meet again before Christmas to try and come up with a plan to implement these.

We are also looking for donations of spare clothing such as underwear, leggings, jogging bottoms in small sizes such as ages 4 - 8.  Please either hand into the office or to the class teacher.  Thank you for your support.

Measles

Measles is circulating in the UK and globally, with both adults and children infected this year

Recent figures show that measles is on the rise and not enough people in Surrey are protected against this infection. Parents and adults are urged to check their families Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) records as only 83.1% of residents have had both doses the MMR vaccine by age 5, far below the 95% needed to protect all of us from the disease.

It's never too late to protect adults and children from measles:

Having the MMR vaccine benefits everyone. If enough people are vaccinated, the disease cannot spread effectively to those who cannot be vaccinated such as immunosuppressed people and very young babies.

Measles infection

Measles is extremely infectious and is mainly spread by coughs and sneezes. It often starts with cough and cold like symptoms, high fever and red sore eyes. The rash starts a few days later and can be harder to see on brown or black skin than on pale skin. It is infectious to others for several days before rash onset, and very disruptive, as those infected must avoid contact with others for 4 days after the rash begins.

You may not know if someone has measles and even passing contact presents a high risk of spreading the infection.

Most people recover fully but it can make you feel very unwell. For some it causes serious illness requiring hospitalisation and (rarely) can be fatal. Measles in pregnancy increases the risk of complications.

If you think you may have measles, please do not attend your GP surgery or hospital without phoning first, so they can provide advice.

Fixed Term Penalty Notice

We are aware that the pandemic has had an effect on families, but the expectation is still that every child should now be attending school full time. If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

1. Pupils identified by police and Inclusion Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

3. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 7 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Inclusion Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice

The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is currently £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days.

If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the local Authority must consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences, for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice.

If there are two parents, and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 21 days.
