January 2024

A message from Mrs Merritt

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic break and are ready for an exciting term ahead.

On the first day of term, I was delighted to see some exceptional home learning projects made the children. Angelfish class created fabulous volcanoes, while the Jellyfish class built houses from the Great Fire of London. In a remarkable re-enactment, the Jellyfish class assembled their houses to form Pudding Lane and witnessed a fire destroying all the structures. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and we were impressed by their creativity as part of their History topic.

I would like to thank all the parents who attended the reading and phonics workshops for Starfish, Seahorses  and Jellyfish classes. It was wonderful to see so many of you present and engaged in your child's learning and practising how to blend and segment. I want to remind you of the importance of hearing your child read at home regularly. This practice plays a vital role in boosting their reading skills and confidence as explained during the session.

We would also like to extend a warm welcome to Mr. Lock, our new Premises Manager.  Furthermore, we would like to wish Mr. Sullivan a very happy retirement. He has been an invaluable member of our team, and we thank him for his years of service.

This half term, our value is positivity. It is important for us to spread this message both in school and at home. Encouraging a positive mindset can make a significant impact on a child's and adults overall well-being and success.

We are delighted to relaunch the Starfish class play and stay parent sessions. These sessions provide an opportunity for you to learn and play with your child every Monday morning from 8:35 to 8:50. We were thrilled to see such a high turnout and appreciate your support.

We are also pleased to announce that our after-school clubs have resumed this term, offering a range of enrichment opportunities for the children. The new sign-up system has worked seamlessly, thanks to your cooperation. It's great to see the children enjoying these activities and having fun outside of regular school hours.

As a reminder, please ensure that your children are wearing black leather school shoes on non-PE days in line with our uniform policy. Your adherence to this uniform requirement is greatly appreciated.

During this term's annual Online Safety Week, we will be hosting parent and child workshops during school hours. We strongly encourage all parents to attend these valuable sessions, as they will equip you with vital knowledge and tools to ensure your child's online safety.  Please see timetable below and use the link to sign up.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. We look forward to working together with you to make this term a successful and rewarding one for all our students.

Internet Safety Workshops

During February, we will be holding an Internet Safety Workshop for each class.  I would like to invite parents/carers to join their child(ren) for the relevant workshop. Please see timetable below, each workshop will start at 9am and finish at approximately 9.45am each day.

The workshop aims to:

·         Explain different aspects of ways to stay safe online

·         Help parents identify things they need to think about so that their children can use the Internet safely

·         Provide practical and relevant advice about Internet Safety and details of where to go for further information

·         Raise awareness about cyberbullying; how to prevent and respond to it.

As part of our Safer Internet Day the children will also be taking part in a special online safety assembly.

Online Safety is a very important aspect of safeguarding and therefore it is vital that one Parent/Carer or one member of the household attends a workshop with each of their children.

Please follow the link to confirm you attendance Internet Safety Workshops Booking Form. The link will close on Monday 29th January, please ensure to add the name of the adult attending.

Attendance from 2nd -  26th January 2024

Remember it is vital that your child comes to school every day unless they are unwell, there is some useful guidance from the NHS about when you should or shouldn't send your child to school which can be found here   https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/ .  Please see chart below that shows attendance for this term so far for each class:

Communicating with the school

The wellbeing of our teachers is a top priority, and we believe it is crucial to provide them with the opportunity to relax and recharge outside of their working hours. Therefore, we kindly request that you refrain from emailing the class email between 6:30pm and 6:30am or over the weekend .

We understand that communication between parents and teachers is essential, and we value your involvement and engagement in your child's education. However, by respecting these boundaries, we can collectively create a healthy work-life balance for our educators, enabling them to continue providing the high-quality education our school.

We encourage you to plan your communications accordingly, aiming to send any non-urgent emails during the school day, ideally between 8:30am and 6:30pm from Monday to Friday. By doing so, we can ensure that our teaching staff have the necessary time to respond to your queries and concerns effectively, while also striking a balance between their personal and professional lives.

We sincerely thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and ongoing support in implementing this policy. It is through our collaborative efforts that we can safeguard the wellbeing of our entire school community. If you have any urgent matters that require immediate attention outside the designated email hours, please do not hesitate to contact the school office directly.

Early Years Foundation Stage Update

Rainbow Fish

Rainbow Fish have been busy this month enjoying their learning. We spent the first week learning all about buses and set up an outdoor bus and bus station for our lovely children, they really enjoyed it and had so much fun pretending they were going on a bus ride.

The children also enjoyed listening to ‘When I Build With Blocks’ and were very excited to build lots of different things using the blocks. Our children built towers, bridges, castles and so much more! We were really impressed with how creative they were and how well they worked together.

The children were excited to dig up potatoes and carrots in the small garden and even used the potatoes to do block printing with paint. It was messy yet fun!

We’ve been reading ‘Dear Zoo’ and the children have really enjoyed learning about different animals at the zoo and the sounds they make. They even designed their own lion using paper plates and paint.

Due to the cold weather lately, please ensure you are sending your child to school with a winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves, we would really appreciate it!

Starfish

Starfish were very excited in their first PE lesson this term.  We got out the wall bars and practised climbing and balancing across different apparatus.  We also learnt how to jump off equipment safely by bending our knees and landing on our feet.  We are all really looking forward to next Friday when we will get the wall bars out again.

Starfish have also been learning about the coldest season, winter.  They enjoyed exploring and investigating the ice that had formed overnight.  The children tried to melt the ice in their warm hands, but this made their hands cold.  Some of the children used the hammer to smash the ice.

The children have also loved playing maths games together.  They are able to take turns and help their friends work out how many frog were swimming in the pool. They used their knowledge of number bonds to 5 to help them.

Starfish enjoyed their trip to The Lightbox where they took part in a storytelling workshop.  The children listened to the story of The Princess and the Frog and then made a puppet of one of the characters from the story.

Key Stage 1 Update

Seahorses

We have already had a very busy start to 2024. Seahorses PE days are Monday and Wednesday for this half term. The children have started learning about weather in Geography, materials and their properties in Science, digital literacy in computing and have started a seasonal art journey.

In our Maths lessons we have been learning how to subtract and about all the other vocabulary that also means subtract. We have been physically taking away objects and jumping backwards along a number line as well as writing our own take away number sentences.

We are looking at sculpture in our art lessons. The children learnt how to make their own paper snowflakes by folding and cutting. They had to follow the instructions very carefully and were very excited by their finished results.

The children enjoyed using the now press play headsets to take on the role of different characters in the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Re-telling a story through acting helps the children to understand how each of the characters might be thinking and feeling.

Jellyfish

This month, Jellyfish have been learning about Clarice Cliff in Art and used her work with pottery as inspiration for our own. We practised printing and incising to make patterns on a clay tile. We then made a pinch pot or a slab pot and used our patterns on these too. When they are dry, we are going to paint them and glaze them!

In Literacy and History, we have been looking at the Great Fire of London. We have read some diaries about it happening and even wrote our own, pretending to be Samuel Pepys—the write of a famous diary all about the fire!

In Computing, we have been collecting data about different things and putting it into tally charts. We then make a pictogram on the chromebooks using this data and can even answer questions about what we can see.

We have also been practising our skills with the glockenspiels and have been working on our improvising (thinking of our own musical pieces) and composing (writing our own musical pieces).

Key Stage 2 Update

Manta Rays

We have our new Geography topic this half term about Rainforests around the World.  We have located them on maps, found out that they are near the Equator and between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, as the climate and weather is the warmest there.  We found out that over half of the world’s animals live in rainforests, so they are a very important habitat!

We have started our new Science topic about Rocks this half term.  The children have really enjoyed finding out that rocks and fossils are millions of years old and can be formed in three different ways.  The children learnt how fossils are formed and even made their own fossils!

In Maths, we have been continuing our learning on Multiplication and Division.  The children have been working so hard to learn the 8 times table and related division facts, using some friendly spiders in our classroom!  In Literacy, we have been looking at the story Dragon Post.  The children have been busy writing letters and including all the features of formal letter writing.

In Art, we have been learning about the artist Henri Rousseau.  The children have been learning how to mix yellow and blue paint to make different shades of green and adding black and white.  In RE, the children have been finding out about the Golden Rules that underpin many religions.  They have been creating mindmaps of what they think Golden Rules should include.

Angelfish

January has been an exciting month for Angelfish class as we have started some great new topics.

In our geography lessons, we have been exploring the fascinating topic of volcanoes. I am delighted  that children created many home learning projects to decorate our classroom. The effort and creativity displayed in these projects is amazing1 thank you to all of the parents who helped at home!

In P.E,  we are focussing on space-themed dance routines. Through this engaging and energetic activity, students have been able to combine their love for dancing with their curiosity about the vastness of our universe. It has been great to see their improvement in coordination, rhythm, and teamwork.

As we get closer to the upcoming multiplication check in May, we are working hard to master our times tables. The students have been diligently practicing their multiplication skills, both in the classroom and at home. We would like to encourage parents to continue their support by regularly revising times tables with their children on TTRS. By doing so, students will be well-prepared for the multiplication check and will develop invaluable mathematical fluency that will benefit them in their future. We will be holding a parent meeting on Tuesday 30th January. Please join us!

In literacy, we have been exploring the captivating world of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Our students have been honing their writing skills by crafting stories based on characters with flaws, drawing inspiration from Dahl's rich storytelling. It has been incredibly rewarding to see the imagination and creativity our students have displayed while developing their characters.

Sea Turtles

In our literacy lessons, we have been delving into the captivating world of space through blog writing. To engage the children and cultivate their creativity, we began by exploring Tim Peake's incredible space mission. Sea Turtles then had the opportunity to craft their own remarkable blog posts. To enhance their communication skills further, the children recorded these as vlogs. It has been truly inspiring to witness their imaginations take flight!

With our science topic centered around space exploration, we kicked off our learning by blowing up inflatable planets, which brought the vastness of our solar system to life. Additionally, our budding scientists have been undertaking investigations and discussions to understand the distinction between orbiting and rotating in space. I'm delighted to see their enthusiasm for this subject and their impressive grasp of scientific concepts.

Turning to our topic lessons, our focus has been on the Tudor period. As part of this journey, the children have learned about the decisive Battle of Bosworth, a pivotal event in English history. In preparation for our class assembly on Monday 28th January, the students have been working hard to bring the Tudor era to life through their performances. We would be overjoyed if as many of you as possible can come and join us to celebrate their achievements.

Our art lessons have also been linked to the Tudors. We have been studying the works of Hans Holbein, a renowned portrait painter. By honing our sketching techniques, we have been able to create stunning half-portraits, enabling us to better understand the placement of key features. Our young artists have shown exceptional skill and creativity in this area, and I'm sure you will be impressed with the results.

Dolphins

This half term has been a busy start to 2024! We have jumped straight into some new and exciting topics. WW1 is the  theme of our History and Literacy lessons, with a focus on our class text of War Horse written by Michael Morpurgo.

In PE, we have started two new sports, tennis and dance. The children have shown great skill during our tennis lessons, so far we have practiced balance, coordination and returning the ball. We have also learnt the importance of the handshake grip and keeping a firm wrist! In our dance lessons, we are making links with music whilst focusing on rhythm and team work to learn Samba moves.

Dolphins have been fantastic Mathematicians this month, learning algebra. Children have enjoyed using function machines and substituting numbers in equations.

In Art,  we have been looking at street art and the famous artist Banksy. The children enjoyed looking at a range of his art works and debated whether they thought it was art or graffiti, it was a very interesting topic! The children have been learning how to create depth in their art work by looking at positive and negative space and creating these in their work. We had some great results!

We were lucky enough to take part in a First Aid workshop with a volunteer from the Red Cross. We learnt how we can use everyday items to help someone who has hurt themselves, role played emergency situations and practiced the recovery position and how to tell an adult how to do CPR. It was very informative and we learnt to always call for help from an adult or if there are none call 999!

School Council

This half term school council members are focussing on reading. They have devised a questionnaire to take back to their classrooms to find out which books the children like reading and what authors they like. They are also finding out about favourite reading genres. We have also discussed adding non-fiction books into the reading vending machine.

The results of the survey will be used to purchase books for our reading vending machine. Every week one child per class is picked to get a book to take home and keep from the vending machine. Children are chosen by class teachers for trying hard in their reading/ phonics lessons or for reading at home. School council members are also going to be creating book reviews and book marks to go into our school library to give other children recommendations of good books to read and why.

This photo shows the year one school councillors asking the survey questionnaires in class and counting the answers.

Measles

Measles is circulating in the UK and globally, with both adults and children infected this year

Recent figures show that measles is on the rise and not enough people in Surrey are protected against this infection. Parents and adults are urged to check their families Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) records as only 83.1% of residents have had both doses the MMR vaccine by age 5, far below the 95% needed to protect all of us from the disease.

It's never too late to protect adults and children from measles:

Having the MMR vaccine benefits everyone. If enough people are vaccinated, the disease cannot spread effectively to those who cannot be vaccinated such as immunosuppressed people and very young babies.

Measles infection

Measles is extremely infectious and is mainly spread by coughs and sneezes. It often starts with cough and cold like symptoms, high fever and red sore eyes. The rash starts a few days later and can be harder to see on brown or black skin than on pale skin. It is infectious to others for several days before rash onset, and very disruptive, as those infected must avoid contact with others for 4 days after the rash begins.

You may not know if someone has measles and even passing contact presents a high risk of spreading the infection.

Most people recover fully but it can make you feel very unwell. For some it causes serious illness requiring hospitalisation and (rarely) can be fatal. Measles in pregnancy increases the risk of complications.

If you think you may have measles, please do not attend your GP surgery or hospital without phoning first, so they can provide advice.

Fixed Term Penalty Notice

We are aware that the pandemic has had an effect on families, but the expectation is still that every child should now be attending school full time. If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

1. Pupils identified by police and Inclusion Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

3. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 7 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Inclusion Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice

The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is currently £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days.

If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the local Authority must consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences, for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice.

If there are two parents, and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 21 days.
