Basic Statistics
Math 163
Statistics is the field of study involving (1) the collection, summarization, and analysis of data; and (2) the drawing of inferences about a population from the examination of a sample of the population. The goals of this course are to introduce each student to the practice of statistics and to provide an overview of common topics in statistical inference.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will gain an appreciation of statistics and should be able to:
Organize and interpret data, create data summaries.
Perform simple linear regression analysis.
Understand the importance of a valid design of experiments and surveys, and random sampling techniques.
Understand properties of a normal distribution and a binomial distribution.
Calculate basic probabilities.
Identify proper inference procedures for one and two sample tests on the mean, one and two sample test of proportion, and chi-squared tests. Interpret p-values.
Use Excel and a Calculator as statistical analysis tools.
PREREQUISITES
PPL 60+ or SAT I MSS 640+ or ACT MATH 26+ or one recent course from MATH 108, 112, 113, 116, 119A, 122B, or 125.
Test scores expire after 1 year. Some students may need to take Math 100, then Math 112 first.

COURSE MATERIALS
All sections of Math 163 will use Basic Practice of Statistics 9th Edition by Davis S. Moore through the Achieve platform.
Achieve is an online portal that has an ebook, tutorials, videos, homework, technology manuals, links, and other tools that will be used in the course. Most assignments will be submitted through Achieve.
How do I obtain access to the Achieve for my class?
Access the website through your instructor's D2l page
Access to your materials will be through the University's Inclusive Access program, and will be charged directly to your Bursar account.
Excel will be used as a data analysis tool
A TI-83 or TI-84 Calculator is required.
