Latin is a window into the study of ancient language, thought, and traditions. It is the goal of Mater Christi’s Latin program to offer students a broad foundation in four key areas of this classical study: basic mastery of the Latin language through active use (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), fundamental principles of grammar (in Latin and English), cultural knowledge, and linguistic connections between Latin and English.
The study of Latin also enhances students’ ability to be attentive readers and listeners, to cultivate pleasure in facing difficult tasks, and to appreciate the traditions and stories of those who walked before us (and continue to influence our world today).
Four Pillars of the Latin Program...
Linguistic Competence
the active use of the Latin language through interactive conversation, Q/As, games, reading, and composition
Grammar Fundamentals
the explicit learning of foundational grammatical principles of Latin (and their connections to English)
Cultural Knowledge
the exploration of the history of Latin and various aspects of the ancient/medieval world, including mythology, literature, songs, daily life/practices, art, and religion
Linguistic Connections
connecting Latin grammar and vocabulary to English via roots, derivatives, and syntax to help students build their general language and reading skills

Ms. Palmer joined Mater Christi as a substitute teacher in the spring of 2025. The Latin program began the following school year. Ms. Palmer is a UVM graduate with ties to St. Michael's College, where she also spent a year of her undergraduate training. Post graduation, she "apprenticed" under the tutelage of John Cirignano at Rice High School and Roy Starling at The Riverside School. Ms. Palmer loves bringing joy and creativity to the classroom and aims, most importantly, to build strong, meaningful connections with all her students.
As of the fall of 2026, Ms. Palmer currently teaches Middle School Latin (6-th-8th grades). She formerly taught K-5 Latin at MCS.
