Elementary  Art

Every student has art once a week.

The Elementary Art Program provides children with opportunities to explore materials, basic art concepts and their unique perceptions.  We discover color, shape, form, line, pattern, rhythm, and symmetry through a variety of experiences.  For example, music and creative movement can help to internalize and deepen one's understanding of a sunflower, animal, or weather condition etc.  Materials include paints, oil and chalk pastels, clay, scissors, papers, pates, and objects from nature.  Large and small motor skills, eye hand coordination and powers of observation are addressed through all lessons.  Projects often involve collaboration and reflect the seasons, encouraging curiosity in the natural world.  The hope is that our young artists will relax and have fun while practicing skills, absorbing knowledge and gaining confidence in a safe creative space.

At MCS, the arts teach more than fine art skill (although we do a lot of that too).  The arts build kindness and resilience in our children.  In Preschool and PreK we are making art that is all about kindness.  While doing that, we practice our manners, we learn how to use and walk with scissors, and most of all we learn to LOVE ART

Please read the monthly specials newsletter to keep up to date on what is happening in the art studio.

I love teaching art because it has tentacles into so many different areas and subject matters.  I integrate CONSTANTLY.

Art is about JOY.  It is my goal to foster a love of learning and appreciating how to see our world creatively.

Lastly, I teach our students how to make mistakes, learn from them, and have the grit to try again.
