Introduction to Art

This is an introductory course that will provide students with 

an overview of the world of Visual Arts. Students will explore the work and lives of various artists in order to understand the relevance of art in society. Students will work with a variety of foundational art materials and techniques to create original works and projects. Students will learn to participate in a collaborative art-making community in which they learn about themselves and their peers through the lens of creativity. 


Art 2: Painting


This is an intermediate course that builds on the concepts and skills covered in Intro to Art. Students will learn color theory to support color mixing skills required for painting. Students will be introduced to an array of wet media including: watercolor paint, tempera paint, acrylic paint and Sumi-e ink. Students will learn basic brush handling and painting techniques for these respective media. Because this is an intermediate course, content will be rigorous and demand a passion for the visual arts. Students’ creative thinking will be challenged with the goal of developing students’ personal style. 


Art 2: Drawing

This is an intermediate course that builds on the concepts and skills covered in Intro to Art. Students will engage in an in-depth study of value and shading techniques with the goal of creating realistic drawings from observation. Students will also learn basic color theory to support drawing in color. Various dry media will be introduced including: graphite, charcoal, chalk pastel, colored pencils and Sumi-e ink. Because this is an intermediate course, content will be rigorous and demand a passion for the visual arts. Students’ creative thinking will be challenged with the goal of developing students’ personal style.
