ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Becca Hoyer and I am so excited to be joining MaST II as a Middle School Art Teacher this year! The 2026-27 school year will be my first year teaching, as I just graduated this past spring with my BFA. In college, I studied both art education and graphic design as well as worked in my campus' art gallery installing/de-installing art exhibitions and designing supplemental materials. While I'm sad to say goodbye to my undergraduate years, I am so excited for this very special, first year of teaching!

In my own K-12 experience, the art room was always a sanctuary of peace and creativity amidst the rest of my academics, and I hope to cultivate a similar environment for my students, the next generation of creative people. My own art practice mostly revolves around graphic design and the digital art world, but I always a traditional project as well. In my freetime, I love making signs and posters for events as well as handmade gifts for my loved ones - paintings, drawing, crochet, jewelry, ceramics, you name it!

Thank you for getting to know me a bit and in advance for your patience as I get to know my way around the new school and begin to connect with all the young artists. I look forward to the year ahead of us!

Teaching Philosophy

At its core, my teaching philosophy revolves around the idea that we all have something to learn from each other. I think this is especially true in the art room, as there are often many ways to go about making or creating something. I strongly believe in fostering a safe, welcoming learning environment where students are free to explore and express themselves and their beliefs, ask and answer questions, and develop their artistic practice as well as creative expression. My hope is for all my students to be successful in these areas while growing socially and emotionally through the practice of important life skills like problem solving, planning and proofing, collaboration, time management, giving and receiving constructive and respectful criticism, and self-reflection. My main objective is to always treat students with respect and encourage them to do the same with each other, myself, and our studio.

When conflict arises, my first step will always be to talk it out with the student. Almost always, there is a deeper reason, or function, for any negative behavior and hopefully by chatting about it, we are able to get at that deeper reason. With conversations like these, I hope to make sure that all the student’s needs are being met and that they are being challenged the right amount. I strive for excitement and engagement about creating, so if that is not the case, I will make the appropriate adjustments. Ultimately, I want to emphasize the importance of having a growth mindset in the art room and encourage my young artists to be bold, try new things, and not to back away from a challenge.
