Technology
There will be NO phone usage of any kind in my classroom. Students are required to put their phones in my phone holder upon entrance to the classroom. This is an essential rule that will not be broken. The detriment of phones to student learning is astronomical. Studies have shown time and again that unmitigated technology usage is harming the development of our brains.
Students will not be allowed to check their phone, answer calls/texts, or submit assignments on their cell phones. If a student refuses to put their phone in my bin, it will result in a write up and a detention. Further instances will result in further disciplinary action.
Plagiarism and AI Usage
Plagiarism within the classroom will not be tolerated in any capacity. The use of unauthorized sources or other’s ideas will result in a zero on the assignment and further disciplinary actions if the issue persists. Parents will be notified of suspected plagiarism. AI is plagiarism and will not be tolerated. If AI use is suspected, it is up to the teacher’s discretion. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to prove it was used. It is up to the student to prove that it was not.
Assignment directions may be changed to in-class, paper assignments if cheating is recurring.
Participation and Sensitivity
This class uses a lot of participation to drive our instruction. This is including but not limited to: sharing of writing, peer conferences, presentations, and just general discussion of class topics. Students are required to participate. A lack of participation will negatively impact their overall grade.
Students are expected to remain professional and kind to their peers when we are sharing and helping each other. These topics will be discussed in respectful and serious conversations. Any jokes, inappropriate comments, or hostile and/or unproductive arguments will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. It is important to be open minded and listen to the perspectives and opinions of others.
