Just some facts about The Outsiders
What happens when being part of a group defines who you are? In this selection from the classic novel The Outsiders, members of rival gangs begin to question how they see themselves and how they see each other.
Susan Eloise Hinton (S.E. Hinton) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948. She developed an interest in reading and writing early in life, and she wrote The Outsiders while she was in high school.
Hinton explains that she did not think that teenagers were accurately portrayed in fiction at that time, so she wrote a novel with a plot that reflected her experience. She also cites several authors and movies as influences. The authors include Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, and Margaret Mitchell; the movies include West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause.
S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders was published in 1967, and it was marketed to adults. At first the novel did not sell well, but the publisher saw that teachers were buying the book to share with students. This discovery contributed to the development of YA literature as a genre.

We discussed the idea of symbolism. Sometimes there is a deeper or even a hidden meaning to things presented in the story. Chess game (Herbert and his father play chess. Mr. White makes a reckless move and Herbert wins the game. The chess game becomes symbolic of life and signifies that those who take unnecessary risks will suffer. The risks that Mr. White makes when playing chess parallel the risks he takes with the monkey’s paw which eventually leads to his son’s death.
We also discussed the superstition of 3s. Patterns of threes are often bad luck. How many threes can you find in the story? (3 wishes, family is 3 people, Mr. White is the 3rd owner of the paw, the sergeant drinks the 3 glasses of whiskey, Maw and Meggins come to the gate 3 times, Mrs. White orders Mr. White to wish 3 times, there are 3 knocks at the door, and the story is separated into 3 parts.

The Lottery
We refreshed on predictions and used the checklist from the Model portion of Friday’s lesson to make predictions about what The Lottery will be about. Here's the checklist you should think about:
the author and title of the selection
any text features in nonfiction, such as maps, charts, or photographs
any genre characteristics that can define certain kinds of writing
mysteries, for example, often feature red herrings, or clues that are intended to be misleading
science fiction often uses principles of real science, which can help readers in making predictions
in fiction, any aspects of the setting that might influence a character’s actions
what motivates a character into feeling a certain way or taking a specific action
Extra information I shared with the class today:
Shirley Jackson (1916 to 1965) began writing when she was young and continued to develop as a writer even though her family did not understand her interest in it. Jackson published her first short story at Syracuse University and went on to publish novels, short stories, and essays after graduating. Her work often mixed humor with horror and psychological drama. It also provided readers with a sense of the struggles that women faced in society during the mid-twentieth century.
“The Lottery” was published in 1948, almost four years after the end of World War II. During that time, a widespread fear of Communism in the United States was developing.
“The Lottery” prompted a record number of readers to write to The New Yorker with divided reviews. Some readers were outraged by the story, and others admired it.
Discuss group behavior or herd behavior.
