MassArt Day 2023: Centering Student Success
This year, we will take time to learn about new solutions and approaches to teaching, celebrate our collaborations with community organizations, and review best practices that help to keep us and our community safe.
We will open MassArt Day with a conversation between Imari Paris Jeffries, Executive Director of King Boston, and President Mary K. Grant. This will be followed by breakout sessions where faculty and staff will be sharing their efforts in the necessary work of creating a MassArt where students, faculty, and staff are supported and respected in their making, learning, and teaching.

9:30 A.M. - 10:30 A.M. -- Discussion in the DMC Lecture Hall with speaker Imari Paris Jeffries, Executive Director of King Boston.
10:45 - 11:15 AM / 11:30 - 12:00 PM -- Faculty/Staff-led breakout sessions sharing our experiences.
All breakout sessions will be offered at the beginning times of 10:45 and 11:30. Attendees will have the chance to visit at least two different sessions.

Imari Paris Jeffries brings a wealth of experience from the nonprofit management, community activism, education reform, and social justice sectors, and has served in executive roles at Parenting Journey, Jumpstart, Boston Rising, and Friends of The Children. He serves as a Trustee of the UMass System, as well as on the boards of USES, Providers Council, and Governor Baker’s Black Advisory Commission. He is a three-time graduate of UMass Boston and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. through UMass Boston’s Higher Education Program. He will be in conversation with President Grant.

Faculty and staff play a critical role in identifying students who are experiencing difficulties and connecting them with the appropriate resources to meet their needs. This session offers strategies to faculty and staff who have concerns about a student's wellbeing - using the NERD model (Notice, Engage, Refer, Discuss) to have conversations with students and assist them in accessing the resources they need to thrive at MassArt. There will be some time for Q&A following a brief presentation of the model and some sample scenarios.

Come learn techniques to prepare yourself in the unlikely event of an active threat on campus, or anywhere else. We will be discussing the principles of RUN, HIDE, FIGHT as well as discussing the difference between a lockdown and a shelter-in-place. If there is time we will also touch on other emergencies on campus, participation is encouraged!

We offer a peek into what has been happening at the interface of MassArt and the Boston-based Design Studio for Social Intervention (ds4si). We will include a brief history, while focusing on the collaboration with the Radical Imagination for Racial Justice (RIRJ) regranting program (Center for Art and Community Partnerships + Artward Bound), and a Civic Design course currently underway. We will also share some preliminary writings being done for ds4si by Judith as part of a social justice APR course release.

A presentation of methodology that utilizes critical thinking during classroom critiques through a process of reflective written and verbal plus/delta feedback, with the goal of giving students time to refine their thoughts before speaking, allowing them to develop their individual voices, and minimizing “groupthink”.
