Course Description
We will learn and apply the writing process, focusing on the traits of writing. We will develop pieces from different writing modes: opinion/argumentative, informational, analytical, and types of narratives.
Grammar (conventions/mechanics) will be taught, practiced and applied in daily journals. Editing is also an essential step in the writing process.
Poetry will be studied to recognize the author’s technique, to enhance critical thinking, and learn ways to make choices as writers.
Grades / Revisions
Many assignments will not be for a grade; however, this practice is essential for learning and will improve performance when evaluated. Completion of the grade-free practice is required, students will be assigned Homeroom for unfinished work.
Revising Writing assignments: Going back to make improvements is one of the most important steps in writing; therefore, revisions will be accepted for credit on the overall score of the essays. Students are given at least three days to submit a revised piece.
Quizzes: Students can retake a quiz. The student will need to ask for the retake and show preparedness by completing a study assignment prior to a reassessment. A different quiz will be used for the retake, while assessing the same skills.
Note to Family
I am both excited and honored to learn with the students. If you have questions or concerns, please feel comfortable contacting me. When we communicate and work together it sets our students up for success.

*The Ins and Outs of 7th Grade Writing*
Homework & Homeroom
We will work diligently in class; therefore, work taken home by the student is by choice or a need for extra time to complete an assignment.
Homeroom is the last period of the day. If a student needs help or extra time, he can attend homeroom for support.
If a student has make-up work, missing/incomplete assignments, or a D/F in the class he will automatically be placed in Homeroom. There is more information regarding Homeroom on the MJHS website.
Behavior & Expectations

Show respect toward others and self through actions and words.
Listen to learn.
Enter prepared.
The expectations, procedures, and rules explained in the MJHS handbook are also upheld in the classroom.

Chromebooks
Chromebooks should be charged.
Students may not sit by an outlet to charge during class.
Students are welcome to charge in my classroom during lunch if needed.
Passes: Bathroom / Other
Each student receives three passes per nine weeks in each classroom. If a student exceeds three passes in that time frame they will receive a detention, excluding special circumstances. Students are informed when they are getting close to using three passes.
This policy is designed do reduce students running around during learning. Students are given time to use the restroom between classes, which is every 45 minutes. If a student has a medical issue that would increase the need for a restroom, please inform the office/nurse.
