1.4: The Georgraphy of Massac County

• Glaciers carved the soil and left behind rich deposits of soil.

• Massac County would have been more similar to Alaska and Canada today around 10,000 years ago. (Tundra)

• The old Ohio River bed left rich soil.

• Massac County was once a part of Johnson and Pope County

1.5: The Kincaid Mound Builders

• Early Native Americans were Hunter-Gatherer that eventually developed agriculture/farming.

• Mississippian Culture built large earthen mounds in their villages and cities.

• Cahokia was the largest Mississippian city.

• Mississippian Culture declined and disappeared around 1400, nearly 100 years before Columbus discovered America.

• Irrigation allowed the Native Americans to farm and stay in one place.
