What is MATHCOUNTS?

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person "bee" style contests. Students meet on a weekly basis after school to do challenging math problems. Its current lead sponsors are Raytheon Technologies and the U.S. Department of Defense STEM. Topics covered include geometry, counting, probability, number theory, and algebra.

A selected number of students take part in the competition series against other schools in the area. The Competition Series has 4 levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours to complete.

Important Dates:

First Meeting: Wednesday, 11/15, 3:15-4:15, room 280

The time will be from 3:15-4:15. Parents should plan on picking up their child no later than 4:30 in the FRONT CIRCLE.
When parents arrive, please park your car along the curb and wait until your child comes to your car. Pull up along the curb in front of the MI entrance to pick up your child. Do not drive in the middle lane or park in the center lot. We are trying to avoid having students cross the road for safety reasons. Please wait your turn and do not cut in front of other cars. If you cannot be there by 4:30, please make arrangements for your child to go home with another student.
After Thanksgiving break, I would like to have a meeting with the parents after a meeting. We would meet for about 30 minutes from 4:30-5:00. I am looking at possibly November 29th, but will send out a note to finalize that.
The EZ pay system is not yet set up for MATHCOUNTS, I will let you know when that is ready to go.

American Mathematics Competition (AMC)

Taken after school at Mason Intermediate School online. 25 questions, 40 minutes

St. Margaret of York (SMOY) Mini-MATHCOUNTS competition

Taken at SMOY (Loveland area) starting at 4:00. Students must provide their own transportation

MATHCOUNTS Regional- Cincinnati competition

Taken at the University of Cincinnati, only available for the 12 top qualifying students in the MI MATHCOUNTS club

Ohio Mathematics League (OML) competition

Taken at Mason Intermediate School online at the regular meeting time, available to all MI MATHCOUNTS members

University of Cincinnati Math Bowl

Taken at U.C. on a Saturday in the late winter/early spring against a variety of different schools in the area.

Mason Intermediate/CHCA Mathcounts competition

Who can participate in MATHCOUNTS?

Only full time 6-8 grade students can participate in the program per the MATHCOUNTS rules. This means that a 5th grade students who is accelerated in 6th grade Honors Math is NOT eligible to participate. A 5th grade MI student may join the MI 5th grade team. Is there a cost to participate?

Yes, the cost is $125 per student. Those students who make the regional MATHCOUNTS competition round will also pay a registration fee of $30. Students will pay via the EZPay system. More information on how to do this will be provided once the team is established.

In the state, MI had 3 of the top 4 scores and won the team competition by a significant margin!

MATHCOUNTS competition

Qualifying for the state MATHCOUNTS competition (against 7th and 8th grade students), were Jennifer Zhou, Caleb Tan, Sanjeev Ganga, Om Sathishkumar, and Austin Yao.

Jennifer Zhou led the group at the state meet in Columbus, finishing in the top 25 in the state against hundreds of other 7th and 8th grade students.

St. Margaret of York (SMOY)

At the SMOY team competition, Manya Gulati led the team followed by Austin Yao, Caleb Tan, Ashish Kothapalli and Om Sathishkumar.
