Profe Tierney's classes are studying the fine arts of the Spanish speaking world. Students were tasked to do their own recreations and have a conversation with the class about the artwork that they chose. Here are the ones that their peers decided were amongst the best. Check them out and please vote! (April 14, 2025)
Earlier this year, as part of an interdisciplinary program linking world languages to music, several Spanish, French, and Chinese classes participated in workshops with musicians from around the world through Culture Connect. Thanks to the Performing Arts department for sharing their access to these talented individuals which allowed us to have musicians from Colombia, Quebec, and China present and perform for our students via Zoom. The musicians spoke in the target language with upper level classes and in English with middle school classes. The Chinese musician, Beitong Liu, demonstrated the erhu, the pipa, and the guzhen which are traditional chinese instruments. The musician from Colombia, Adrian Sabogal, demonstrated the marimba and other traditional percussion instruments. He also explained the historical context of the various rhythms and styles of Colombian music. In February, the French Canadian musician, Yann Falquet, performed for all 8th grade students. During his performance, students were able to experience traditional Québecois music. Additionally, students learned about the various instruments he played, in particular, the spoons, a Canadian specialty. The timing was perfect as the 8th graders were in the middle of their Voyage à Québec project which highlighted Québec’s annual winter carnival and the famous Hôtel de Glace. (April 15, 2025)
On March 7th, fourteen Senior French students attended a field trip to the MFA that was funded by a grant from the MEF. This field trip was a culmination of a unit of study and a research project on a French speaking artist. Students had to present works by their artists and identify characteristics typical of their artists in each work presented. It is always great to see student’s reactions to seeing the works they have studied in person and reflecting on how seeing the work in person impacts their perceptions and analysis of the work. Students also explored and discovered the works of many other artists studied in class. Here is a link to the album of photos for this trip. (March 7, 2025)
