I selected structure as the primary theme for my A-Level course. I believe 'structure' is broad enough as a concept to allow me to explore different approaches - abstract or literal, and it provides the freedom to work across various forms of media. I have chosen four sub-themes to split my work across, which reach from the natural world (Landscapes, Skeletal) to the man-made (Cartography, Architecture).
This topic focuses on the natural structure of landscapes and scenery. I chose this as a sub-theme because I believe that each landscape is unique in its own way and each artist has their own interpretation and style when trying to recreate them: this gives me a lot of freedom when looking for artist inspiration or when creating my own pieces. I am planning on using the 3D modelling program Blender to recreate photographs as 3D scenes. From there, I can manipulate the lighting, textures and add filters using a photo editing software such as Photoshop to create stylized renders. I also have a wide variety of clients to choose from as landscapes are a fairly popular choice for background art in many forms of advertisement.
Although on a smaller scale, Skeletons offer another nature-related interpretation of the theme. Skeletal structure would mostly focus on ancient fossils of dinosaurs and other creatures found in the Mesozoic era. Skeletons show how structure has survived long after these animals became extinct and has become one of the only ways of how we understand them today. Blender would also play a big part in this topic, using it to recreate skeletal models. Reference and inspiration will be straight forward as both Oxford and London have some of the world's best natural history museums with many original and replica dinosaur remains. Clients would most likely include museums or art galleries looking to promote themselves to tourists.
Cartography provides an interesting way of exploring how the previously mentioned physical structure of 3-dimensional landscape is reflected in 2-dimensional maps. I have always been interested by the sheer amount of styles that maps come in and believe it to be a shame that the cartography industry is dying out. My idea would be to explore different map types and somehow promote the art of map making. I would probably use Photoshop to create my work as maps have traditionally been presented as 2-dimensional illustrations. As for clients, this work would most likely be targeted at a national park, travel publisher or tour guide company.
Architecture is probably the most common association people have with the word 'structure', this is because it quite literally is just the art of creating structures. My work would focus on the beautiful and historic buildings found in Oxford, as I have very easy access to see and photograph them. Since architecture is just working with 3D shapes, I would most certainly use Blender as I'd imagine it to be fairly similar to the software that architects would use. In terms of clients, I would envision this being for a tourism company (similar to cartography), or to promote a city as a whole.
