Mascalls Academy Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

Supporting the development of character and cultural experiences of each of our students is something that is hugely important to myself and my team here at Mascalls Academy.  An integral aspect of our IB Middle Years Programme is developing our students to become global citizens by being exposed to a broad range of experiences inside and outside of the classroom.  These learner experiences form the foundations of the IB learner profile and through the careful design and delivery of our curriculum, combined with our strong offer of co-curricular activities, Mascalls Academy students have the opportunities to dream of an exciting future, full of varied opportunities.

Next Tuesday I will be hosting Breakfast with 15 students who have been nominated by staff or other students for their contributions to our local community and beyond.  These incredible students include Leo who has been asked to play in a band to celebrate the King's Coronation, Zara and Tatum for supporting our Dance department in coaching younger members of our local community, and Mae, Callum, Jeremy and Cameron for their exceptional achievements.  If your child has achieved something that you would like us to share in the celebrations, please do contact your child's advisor to let them know.  We will continue to celebrate the success of students by awarding Golden Tickets for exceptional progress in the classroom but we want to further our recognition of all that our students achieve and contribute to others around them.

Our relaunch of Student Voice has gathered momentum with it being launched to Students in my morning briefing on Monday.  We are recruiting 3 students per year group to represent their College and form our Student Council.  Thank you to those students who have already applied, we will be shortlisting next week and look forward to building a team who will be leading and supporting positive communication between myself and the student body.

Many thanks

45 Year 9 students are preparing to embark on their training for their first expedition day in May.  This is the first cohort of students working towards their Bronze Award at Mascalls Academy for many years.  Miss Gough and her DofE team are looking forward to supporting students to achieve their Bronze award and plans are already underway for many to complete the Silver Award in Year 10.  Please see the video to the left which shows all of the achievements of this 1st cohort of students.  Well done Year 9 and good luck!

Alice in Wonderland

Congratulations to all the Drama Club students who have been attending in huge numbers on a Monday after school throughout this academic year.  They created a wonderful evening performance of Alice in Wonderland where many staff, students, parents and grandparents attended to see them perform.  In addition to this, we welcomed students from Paddock Wood Primary to come and see a Matinee performance of the show and the cheers from the audience was deafening!  Not all students that attend Drama Club are on the stage and huge congratulations to all those who create and manage the set design and the team who manage the technical aspects of the performance.  Another fantastic way to celebrate the diverse talents that our Mascalls students have!

Mascalls Academy Travel Diaries

New York, New York

Many thanks and congratulations to our outstanding 6th formers who are fresh back from an Art trip to New York city. Right from the outset it was clear that our students would maximise the experience.  Based in the hustle and bustle of Times square, it didn't take long for our students to step up to the pace of a native New Yorker, capturing stunning photography at every opportunity. The students were happy to pound the sidewalk in awe and without complaint , energy fueled by the generous portions of the great New York cuisine.

Highlights of the trip extended beyond the superb exhibitions enjoyed in the Guggenheim and MoMA. Students enjoyed the atmosphere, the famous architecture, the 360s night time views enjoyed from the top of the Empire State. At the poignant 9/11 memorial. our students made us proud with their heartfelt empathy and deep respect. The fact the students were multidisciplinary meant that alongside our artists and photographers, we had media specialists, as well as our very own A level historian who could enlighten us on the history of Rockefeller! We found our sea legs on the short trip to Staten Island, the whole city laid out for the students to take in, including Liberty herself.  Thanks New York, for a warm and friendly reception at every turn!

Barcelona

A little bit about Barcelona...

Congratulations to our Year 11s who spent last weekend in Barcelona. The 3 day trip was packed with a variety of cultural experiences, visits, lots of food and fun and opportunities to use the Spanish that they have been studying.

Camp Nou proved popular, the Flamenco show was amazing and they learnt a lot on their guided tour of the city. However, a proud moment for all the staff was the way the students conducted themselves in their 2 hour language lesson, which included taking to the streets to interview members of the public. The students were asking questions, listening to responses and interacting with everyone from a young student, to a doctor and a 98 year old woman. Upon our return to the Language School, we heard the comment:  'Oh, I feel fluent in Spanish now!'

Well done Year 11 - you were amazing and we are very proud of you all!
