Dear Parents / Carers,
We have made it to the final day of term! Students have arrived today full of festive merriment and it has been lovely to see the exchanging of cards across the canteen tables at break and lunchtime throughout this week. We have held celebratory breakfasts for our Year 7 advisories with the highest attendance this week in the 6th Form Common room. It has been a real pleasure to see how their friendships have flourished in their advisory groups and hearing them share their Christmas plans with Mr Toal, myself, their Head of College and their advisor. Our Anti-bullying ambassadors also shared a breakfast this morning to thank them for the work they have undertaken this term. Mrs Wakefield's advisory kicked off the day on Thursday with some Christmas singing in reception along with Miss Shaw-Kew who now knows all of the words to Kelly Clarkson's 'Underneath the tree'!
Following up on complaints we recieved regarding the 206 bus service, we have been in communication with Starline and KCC and have been assured by Starline that the issues with this service have now been resolved. We are closely monitoring the bus services currently to ensure that our students are brought to school safely and on time. We are aware that there are some issues with the time of the 215 service in the morning and KCC are also aware of this and have assured us that when the many roadworks on that route are complete over the Christmas break, the service should be more timely, again we will be monitoring this. Any students who are late to school because of their bus will not be marked as late
Upon our return in January, can I please take the opportunity to request that parents and carers check that students have the correct uniform and equipment ready for the new term. We have found that we have seen an increase in students needing to access the 'Ready to learn' gate to collect uniform items and stationary as this term has progressed. This should only be used if there is a genuine need for support or if something has been forgotten, not for students to collect items on a daily basis. The purpose of the 'Ready to Learn' gate is to support in preventing sanctions and enabling students to be 'Ready to Learn' from the start of the day so that the provision of equipment does not take up any lesson time. Please can you ensure that your child has their Chromebook fully charged, a pencil case with black / blue pens, pencils, a ruler, a protractor, compass and a scientific calculator. A maths set or a pack of highlighters is a great stocking filler! If you require support with accessing these items please contact the relevant College admin team who can support in equipping your child with the correct equipment for the start of term. In addition to this, trainers are not permitted as part of the school uniform unless with a medical certificate. Students who choose to wear trainers from the start of next term, will be placed in the Inclusion room for the day. Blazers must be worn each day and any students without their blazers will be placed in Inclusion also. Please ensure that your child has established strong routines in getting ready for the day by packing their bag the night before and ensuring they are wearing full uniform.
To end on a festive theme, we have held a Christmas card competition across the academy and have submitted our finalists towards the LAT Christmas Card competition. We had more entries than we have ever had before and it was incredibly difficult to choose the finalists but please see the designs of Gabriela, Isabel and Faith pictured below.
I also wanted to mention a particularly kind Christmas gesture and action from Rosie in Year 9. She visited Canterbury with her family recently and saw the number of homeless people there and wanted to do something to help. Rosie has asked staff at Mascalls to support in bringing warm clothing items and blankets, and she and her family are going to go and distribute them this weekend. Thank you Rosie for supporting people who are not as fortunate as others and thank you to staff for all of your donations.
We are fully aware that for some of our families, Christmas can be a challenging time for a variety of different reasons. Please use this link to access some methods of support with managing positive mental health over the Christmas break.
As always, we are so very grateful for your support and collaboration, and from all of us here at Mascalls Academy, we wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Christmas Community Tea
The Food and Nutrition and Catering students, expertly led by Miss Shead and the DT department hosted a Christmas Afternoon Tea for the local community in the PW Community Centre. Students from Year 7 - 13 came to perform and created a wonderful atmosphere. The event recieved such positive feedback and all reported that our students were polite, fun and excellent chefs!
The event was free to those who attended and students had fundraised the money to fund the event themselves, Brookside Garden Centre kindly donated a plant to each of the guests who attended as a Christmas present. We are so proud of our staff and students who organised the event and gave back to the local Paddock Wood Community we are so proud to be a part of!
Duke of Edinburgh Update
23 / 24 Bronze DofE Success!
We're thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our recent Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award recipients! These dedicated students successfully completed their award, passed their assessments, and attended the awards evening with their parents to celebrate their huge success.
Their hard work and commitment to personal development, physical fitness, volunteering, and skill acquisition is truly inspiring. We're incredibly proud of each and every one of them!
We hope to see as many students as possible continue their journey with the Duke of Edinburgh programme and progress onto the Silver award in the new year.
23 / 24 Silver DofE Awards Evening
The awards evening for the Silver students of last year will take place in January, with the date and time sent out in advance to all parents. I hope that the recent mock exam period has been successful for you all and we look forward to carrying over that success into the new year. All students have done what they need to do with the Award and during the awards evening we will advertise what our students will need to do should they wish to complete the Gold award, depending on them staying at Mascalls for Year 12. There is a spot on the wall waiting for photos from the Gold Awards day at Buckingham Palace in 2026.
New Bronze DofE Cohort
We are pleased to announce that this year we have another strong group of students signed up and ready to take on the Award in the new year. The award will start properly in January when all of the new students sit down with myself and Katrina from the DofE, we will go through their choices for each of the sections and then we will begin with an eye on the two expeditions students will be completing as part of their award.
New Silver DofE Cohort
Continuing on from the Bronze Award to take on the challenge of Silver is a big step. As I said we are keen for as many as possible to carry on from Bronze, so if you are ready for the challenge, then please fill out the google form sent out to parents and we will invite you in. A polite reminder please that the deposit for the Silver Award will need to be paid by the end of December.
Congratulations to all of these amazing students who have completed and taken part in their Duke of Edinburgh awards this year, I hope you all have a restful Christmas break.
Mr Collis
Former Mascalls Academy students are becoming more and more successful in their aim for world music domination! The Polygons begun performing in 2016 whilst students here at Mascalls and are going from strength to strength. We were lucky enough to have them come and perform at our inaugural Mascalls Academy Staff Awards event this week and they were simply fantastic. Their version of Careless Whisper was just brilliant. For anybody wanting to find out more, please click this link to take you their website. Thank you Keelan, Will, Josh and Sam for coming back and performing for us all to see out 2024!
All year 8 students in Shackleton were invited on a day trip to London to Ice Skate at the world famous Somerset House on the Strand. Our excited students met at the start of the school day and walked down to Paddock Wood Station to hop on the train to Charing Cross.
There were laughs and smiles a plenty as students spent one hour on the ice trying to stay upright. After skating, the students had the chance to explore London, taking in the sites of the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament on their way to have lunch at a festive Embankment.
Every student was a credit to the school which was commented on by several members of the public as we shared a journey home on the train.
Our next Year 8 trip has already been organised for our Luther King students as they planned to visit the London Eye on Wednesday 19th March 2025.
Mr Toal - Assistant Principal - Deputy Head Shackleton College
Our Year 12 and 13 students have donated over 90 selection boxes to two local food banks this Christmas (Paddock Wood and FEAST in Tonbridge).
Thank you for their kindness and generosity in supporting others.
