MAS11 Info Bulletin 3.1

Bromcom Student App

The Bromcom Student app is designed to increase the engagement between Students and Schools by sharing key information about their day to day school information, homework, timetables and exam information. Additionally if students have any changes to exams or exam clashes this is where it will be published. Students have been guided on how to register for this during Advisory sessions and a 'how to guide' can be found on the Yr11 Google Classroom called 'Post16 Pathways 2022'.

MAS11 Key Purpose: Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to a new year and a new term. I hope everybody had a restful break and enjoyed a wonderful holiday period. It was an exciting end of Semester 2 with many fantastic activities which brought the Mascalls Academy community together. We enjoyed the Dance show over two nights, educational trips to places such as Ikea and Borough Market, the veterans Christmas lunch and finished the term with Yr7 Christmas Showcase where students shared their talents with friends and family. I am happy to say that the Yr11 cohort has started well and I have every faith they will remain focussed on the challenges ahead.

We are very much looking forward to a successful 2022 with our Yr11 students and I thank you in advance for your support to ensure that your child continues to work hard work and that they have the very highest expectations with their attitude to classwork, independent study and revision. To help support your child we will resume our Period 6 lessons from Monday 10th January and although these lessons are not compulsory they have proven to have had a positive outcome of GCSE results. The Period 6 timetable can be found on the MAS 11 website by clicking the tab called 'Revision Resources'. The next round of mock exams commence next week, therefore I am asking for your support to ensure your child has everything they need to have the best chance of succeeding in their subjects. This includes revisiting their revision timetable, providing a suitable place for revision, a full set of notes and equipment for every subject.

I would like to remind parents/carers & students that the deadline for applications for Post16 education and apprenticeships via Kent Choices is the 22nd January. Students have been guided through the process during Semester 1 and 2 and further information can be located on the Yr11 Google Classroom. If students have any further questions they should speak to their Advisor in the first instance.

Lastly we look forward to working with you and your child in 2022 to achieve the very best GCSE grades for your child.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Stamato

Assistant Principal & Deputy Head of Luther King College

Revision Tips for Parents/Carers

Establish healthy daily habits

A healthy routine is vital for a child to be successful at school and in their GCSE exams. Encouraging positive daily habits helps children break bad habits and encourages an achievement-driven mentality. Some simple habits to incorporate into a child’s daily routine to improve school success include:

  • Keeping a bottle of water by their bedside.

  • Vitamin D (from sunlight) has been proven to have a significant effect on school attainment. Try to encourage walking to school vs. other transport methods.

  • Encourage your children to breathe deeply for at least two minutes, 3 times a day, focusing on each breath to help regain focus and clarity.

Maintain high attendance levels

According to the UK’s Department for Education (DfE), “missing the equivalent of just one week a year from school can mean a child is significantly less likely to achieve good GCSE grades”.

When issued, this statement prompted parents across the UK to rethink term-time holidays, but there are still steps you can take to ensure your child has great attendance levels:

  • When your child is ill, make sure they get plenty of rest and vitamin C to ensure a prompt return to school.

  • If your child doesn’t show any obvious signs of illness, explore other reasons why they could be reluctant to go. From friendship problems to anxiety, the best way to encourage your child to speak to you about other circumstances affecting attendance is to maintain an open and honest relationship.
