Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have reached the end of our first module of the academic year and have had a very busy, but incredibly positive start. As I have said in previous updates, our Year 7s and 12s have made a fantastic start and have progressed hugely throughout the course of this first part of the year. Year 10s have made a great start to their KS4, with evidence of them really stepping up to the additional level of challenge that GCSEs bring through the high level of independent work being completed and their articulation of knowledge in lessons. Year 11s have been attending the P6 sessions far earlier on in the academic year than ever before in the preparation for their upcoming mock exams.
Over the course of the module, we have awarded more than 12,500 MYP reward points to recognize students who demonstrate outstanding qualities aligned with the IB MYP Learner Profile traits.
The top 5 traits celebrated across the school were:
Knowledgeable – Students are engaging deeply with the curriculum, showing a strong commitment to acquiring and applying knowledge across various subjects.
Thinker – Many students have been recognized for their critical and creative thinking skills, helping them approach problems with insight and reflection.
Communicator – Our learners have excelled in expressing their ideas confidently and collaborating effectively with peers, showing that they value both speaking and listening.
Principled – Integrity and responsibility have shone through, with students acting honestly and standing by their values while respecting others.
Risk-taker – Students have demonstrated the courage to take on new challenges, push beyond their comfort zones, and explore innovative approaches to their learning.
We are proud of the way our students continue to embody these key traits and look forward to their continued growth in the coming year.
We also want to take a moment to express our gratitude for the excellent attendance so far. Your child's consistent presence in class has is a significant factor in their academic success. Good attendance is essential for students to fully engage with their learning and build strong relationships with their peers and teachers. Thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child is in school regularly.
It is a very busy start to the year, especially for our Year 7 students where everything has been so new to them. I hope all our wonderful students have a restful and happy half term break and we look forward to welcoming them back on the 5th November following our staff Inset day on the 4th.
Thank you for your continued support
Mrs Brooks
A word from Mr Reader, Deputy Principal:
Having spent the last 18 years of my career working at another Trust Academy it has been a huge jump for me personally to move and work at a different school. Having visited the Academy with my son last October during the open mornings for Year 6 families I was so impressed by the experience it left a real mark on me and the thoughts about future opportunities.
Fast forward to October 2024 and I have received such an unbelievably warm welcome from all of the students and staff during these first seven weeks. It is quite the challenge to learn more than 1400 student names and I am still working my way through them but I have been so impressed with their attitudes to learning. I am really looking forward to supporting the staff at the Academy to drive forward the experience for the students and equally the various opportunities to meet their supportive families.
I wish you and your families a restful half term
As you are aware, we have made a significant push on independent learning this term. We are pleased to report that approximately 95% of students have completed their homework tasks on time for this module. These students have been rewarded with achievement points, and Amazon vouchers were awarded to the top three students in Sparx Maths/Science.
Next term, we will be presenting college certificates to the students with the highest number of homework achievement points for Module 1.
We greatly appreciate your support during this transition in our expectations. Please note that there are still a few technical issues within the Bromcom system. In some cases, homework that has been completed may appear as incomplete or outstanding. We are working with BromCom to resolve this and appreciate how frustrating this must. In the meantime, please ask your child to show you their completed homework for confirmation.
Mr Jegede - Assistant Principal - Deputy Head of Earhart College
Thank you to all who have registered your interest in completing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award this year, this Award is open to all of our Year 9 Students. Module 1 has been full of huge success stories within the PE department. We have seen over 250 students attend a sports club, a record number of students at badminton, boxing and volleyball clubs and seen the start of the Football and Netball season. Year 7A/B, 8, 9, 10 and Post 16 football season is underway with some fantastic results coming through. Additionally the u13s and u15s netball season has got off to a fantastic start. Please note that some of the extra curricular clubs will change after half term with Rugby and Girls Football beginning. More information to be shared at the start of Module 2.
This module saw Mascalls Academy host the first ever LAT Netball tournament for year 9 and year 10 girls. This event brought every secondary school in the trust to Mascalls for a fantastic tournament. Although the weather was awful this didn’t dampen the spirit of the girls who performed admirably. A big thank you to our year 13 Sport btec students who stepped in at the last minute as parking marshalls. Special mention to the year 10 team who finished in 4th place overall out of 14 schools. This was a brilliant event and couldn’t have been hosted without hard work and dedication of our fantastic PE department.
We had Year 10 girls and boys head off to Leigh Academy Bexley this week to take part in a LAT Handball competition, Mascalls Academy came 4th and 5th respectively out of 14 other secondary academies. Congratulations again to those who took part!
Thank you for all the support from parents allowing their children to represent Mascalls Academy at fixtures over the course of Module 1 and to the staff for coming to support all of our home and away fixtures.
Mr.Charman - Head of PE
Year 7 Parents Maths Update
Over the past eight weeks, our Year 7 students have made a successful and seamless transition from primary to secondary mathematics. We have been so impressed with their enthusiastic participation in lessons and how they have embraced challenge in the classroom.
During this period, the mathematics department has carefully assessed each student’s abilities through a blend of engaging lesson activities and formal assessments. These combined initiatives have enabled us to effectively place students in classes tailored to their current abilities and future potential, ensuring they learn at a pace that allows them to thrive.
As we embark on the new module, all Year 7 students will be assigned to their new classes. We are excited to support every pupil in reaching their full potential within a learning environment that is best suited to their individual needs. Together, we look forward to fostering a rich educational experience that encourages growth and success in mathematics.
Mr Harper - KS3 Lead Maths
Module 1 saw History Club return with a varied set of sessions that were well attended and enormously enjoyed by students from Years 7 to 11. A first session tackled the most famous dead language in the world, Latin. Students got a chance to read and translate the ancient language and find out more about Pompeii - not something we'd usually get a chance to focus on in lessons! The following session was about the role films play in popularising History, including the mistakes they make in accuracy and the impacts they can have. After that, the club tackled the issue of public speaking and its importance in History, as its members discussed the upcoming 'Great Debate' held by the Historical Association, which encourages students to connect their local stories of the past to global histories. Finally, it wouldn't be History Club without an absolutely over the top and energetically-played board game to finish the half term off. In this case, the game was the ever-popular Romans: a heated competition of conquest, control, and dealing with the extremely fickle whims of 'fortuna'. Sounds interesting?
Join Ms Smith, Mr Burton, Mr Matthews, and Dr Pollack for History Club in Module 2, Tuesdays after school. There will be plenty more opportunities for research and ridiculous games!
It has been a very busy term with Years 7-10 completing speaking assessment, but all students have conducted themselves extremely well in these and we have had lovely conversations with them in Spanish on a variety of topics. We have also kept them busy completing work on Languagenut! We were the number 1 school in the whole LAT and, although we have now fallen to 4th place, we will work towards getting that first position again! Special mention to the Year 9 and 7 students who helped us running the French and Spanish markets in Open Evening. We are extremely proud of how they used the language in context.
Year 11 and Sixth Form students have been very busy as well preparing for their mocks. Year 13 students have shown great resilience while working on their essay skills. In this example, the students worked collaboratively to write an essay paragraph that showcases really complex structures to access top marks in this exam task.
Media and Film Department Update
In year 10 media and film studies ,the students have wasted no time in getting stuck into their option subjects with a fantastic attitude towards learning new things.
In film, students have been getting to grips with a whole new film language consisting of terms such as 'mise-en-scene' (a collective term for setting, costume, props, positioning and performance); cinematography (the relationship between lighting and camera); editing techniques (making sense of how stories are told) and some terms to describe soundtracks that they never knew existed! They have spent time analysing these component parts and their relationship to each other in helping create meaning for, and responses from, different audiences.
Notable mentions in film go to Keira for her outstanding application of film terminology and her ability to extract a variety of interpretations from a film sequence, and Jude for the sheer range of films he has watched! This provides him with an excellent bank of knowledge to draw from particularly in relation to genre conventions and directorial style.
In media studies we have begun by taking a whistlestop tour through the historical and patriarchal advertising of the 1950s into more contemporary marketing campaigns such as This Girl Can, that have been hugely successful in breaking down barriers between women and sport through inclusive representations of women in their advertising. The students have been learning to analyse how media products communicate meanings to specific target audiences whilst also paying close attention to the relevant contexts of the time in which they were made and we end module 1 firmly in the James Bond franchise where we continue to explore the representation of gender over time. There have been some insightful discussions and sophisticated written responses around the changing role of the 'bond girl' and how the franchise both conforms to and challenges feminist theoretical perspectives.
Notable mentions in media go to Emily for her excellent extended writing that incorporates ambitious vocabulary and media theory and Reggie, whose enthusiasm and inquisitiveness from the outset has encouraged others in the class to feel confident enough to get involved in discussions.
Miss Entacott - Head of Media and Film Department
The seminar focused on the topic of careers in the music industry and the kind of jobs our students could potentially look to do in the future. The students were inspired by the speaker from Water Bear and a number have commented positively to me today that they are now more confident and knowledgeable in the wide array of jobs on offer within the music industry.
Well done to all of our music students who took part and thank you for your engagement, questions and how well you represented the academy!
