Welcome to the Leigh Academy Mascalls Parent Update, your first stop for all academy news and events.
Dear Parents and Carers,
I would like to start by extending a huge thank you to both our students and their families. Your proactivity over the half-term break—specifically in checking new timetables and ensuring everything was ready for the start of the new module—has been fantastic. It has been a pleasure to see how quickly our students have settled back into the rhythm of academy life. This is particularly impressive for our Key Stage 3 students, many of whom have navigated their new schedules with maturity and ease.
This week, our Year 11 students have been undertaking their next round of mock exams. I have been incredibly impressed by their exemplary conduct and focus; they have approached these assessments with true diligence. We are immensely proud of their work ethic and look forward to seeing the impact of their hard work in their results.
Because our Year 11s have been working hard in the 2012 Hall, I have delivered our assemblies online this week. My focus was on the importance of communication and the concept of having ‘one voice’ in the classroom. This ensures that students can hear one another share their answers and can focus clearly on the instructions and knowledge their teacher is giving them. I explained how communication is a crucial skill that begins in infancy with parents and, for us in school, we are continuing to support the development of this vital life skill. I challenged the students to think of a single job where there is absolutely no need for communication; I have received many brilliant suggestions and have thoroughly enjoyed explaining to students how communication still exists in those roles despite their relentless attempts to prove me wrong! So far, we are yet to find one!
Building on this focus on literacy and communication, it has also been brilliant to see our Year 12 and 13 reading mentors in action this week. They have been supporting our Year 7 students in developing their reading skills in the library during advisory time, and seeing that cross-year collaboration is always a highlight of our academy culture.
MasStars continue to be awarded across the academy, and it was a particular pleasure walking the site this morning with the CEO of Leigh Academies Trust to see these awards being given in advisory sessions. We also had the opportunity to witness students exploring what a By-election is, leading to some truly insightful discussions about our political structures in the UK today.
Thank you for your continued support.

The Austria ski trip this February half-term was a resounding success, bringing together a fantastic group of students from Years 10, 11, 12, and 13 for an unforgettable week in the Alps. Throughout the trip, students showed incredible determination as they tackled the Austrian slopes, which were transformed by a significant amount of fresh snow. While the deep powder made for picturesque scenery, it also created challenging conditions that required extra focus and physical effort from everyone. From complete novices to seasoned skiers, every student made huge strides in their confidence and technical ability despite the demanding terrain.
Beyond the skiing itself, the group fully embraced the local culture and evening entertainment. A particular highlight was the curling session, which sparked some friendly competition across the year groups and provided a brilliant way to unwind after long days on the mountain. The mix of ages created a great sense of community, with the older students often stepping up to support the younger ones through the tougher ski sessions.
This experience was made possible by the dedicated staff members who volunteered their half-term break to organise and lead the trip. A massive thank you goes to Mr Toall, Miss Mitchell, Ms Shepelev, Mr Bowles, and Miss Priest.

We wanted to share an update on how our October non-school uniform day has had a direct impact on our partner schools in Bereko, Tanzania. As many of you know, Mascalls, St Andrews Church and the wider Paddock Wood community have shared a close link with Bereko for many years, and it is great to see this partnership go from strength to strength recently.
Following a failure of local crops, students in all three schools in Bereko are currently navigating the difficult hunger months. Thanks to the money raised in October, these students are being supported through this period, and the local headteachers have asked us to pass on how much they value our community’s ongoing care.
Our connection with the region continues to grow. Following Miss Honey’s visit in October to see the Bereko Foundation’s work firsthand, we have now selected a group of Year 12 students who will be joining her on her next trip to Africa. It’s a brilliant opportunity for our students to build on the long-standing relationship between Paddock Wood and Bereko.
