Welcome to the Leigh Academy Mascalls Parent Update, your first stop for all academy news and events.
Dear Parents and Carers,
I am delighted to share some fantastic feedback following our International Baccalaureate (IB) Evaluation visit last Thursday and Friday. We welcomed two IB educators to the academy to see our Middle Years Programme (MYP) in action across Key Stage 3, and we couldn’t be prouder of the result.
The visitors spent two full days immersed in LA Mascalls life—visiting lessons, observing breaks and lunchtimes, and meeting with our governors, parents, and many of our wonderful students. While the formal report will follow, their verbal feedback was fantastic:
A Warm Community: They were struck by how welcoming the academy is, highlighting the positive way our students interact and the genuine, supportive relationships between staff and pupils.
Breadth of Opportunity: Our curriculum really shone; they were impressed by the practical skills our students develop and our extensive co-curricular programme. In fact, they enjoyed the atmosphere so much they mentioned wishing they could return for our OnMas Festival at the end of the year!
Celebrating Achievement: It was a pleasure to have them join one of our College Celebration Assemblies. They highly commended our rewards programme and the way we recognise the hard work of our young people.
This visit was a brilliant opportunity to showcase the vibrant learning environment we strive to create every day. My thanks go to the staff and students who made such a lasting impression.
As a large staff body of almost 100 members, we naturally see some changes throughout the academic year. While we always strive to minimise disruption to learning, at times, these adjustments are unavoidable. Looking ahead to Module 4, I am pleased to announce the return of Mrs. Alldridge, Teacher of Drama and former Deputy Head of Post 16. She returns from maternity leave having successfully achieved her SENCO qualification and will be taking on the vital new role of Lead Practitioner – Inclusion, supporting our SEN and Inclusion provision.
With Mrs. Alldridge’s return and two other members of staff heading off on their own maternity leave, we have had to make some adjustments to student timetables. We have done everything possible to limit the number of teacher changes; however, it is impossible to avoid this entirely. Students will receive their new timetables next week before we break for half term, allowing them to be fully prepared for the new module.
Please be assured that Key Stage 4 and 5 students have predominantly kept the same teachers to ensure continuity during such crucial stages of their education. We appreciate that mid-year changes are not always ideal, but they are necessary to maintain the high standard of support and teaching your children deserve.
On a celebratory note, we have recently held our module assemblies to recognize the outstanding efforts of our students. I am thrilled to announce that our very first Silver award has been presented to Lauren in Year 9. This is a wonderful achievement, and while many other students are now catching up quickly, Lauren has already set her sights on the Gold award by the end of the year. The race is officially on to see if she will be the first student in Mascalls history to achieve it! It is a joy to see our students pushing themselves to reach these milestones.
Thank you for your continued support of the academy.
Warm regards,
Mrs Brooks
Principal
This week we welcomed Assistant Principal Mr Nolan and Mr Fielding to the Academy to deliver some outreach work in association with Leigh Academy Snowfields. Snowfields is one of two specialist schools within Leigh Academies Trust and is based across three sites in Bearsted, Cranbrook and the Isle of Sheppey. Snowfields supports students with profound learning difficulties specialising in supporting students with autism. Working alongside Deputy Principal, Steven Reader the two colleagues developed and prepared a session with Leigh Academy Mascalls staff to showcase strategies that can be employed in the classroom to support all learners and in particular the adaptive techniques that are so important to an inclusive classroom in a mainstream setting. A genuinely positive session, shaped by thoughtful and open contributions from staff, showing their genuine commitment to doing what’s right for pupils.
A reminder that if you would like to contact the SEND team at Leigh Academy Mascalls then the best way to get in contact is via the dedicated mailbox which can be found on our website or directly via this link send@mascalls.latrust.org.uk
It has been a pleasure this module to watch Year 11 really knuckle down and begin their build up towards the summer examination series. It is also important for them to still keep a hold of the enjoyment and fun of learning even with the added pressure that the year brings. This week they have been performing heart dissections in Science and it has been fantastic to see them working their way through that together in a mutually supportive way. In addition to their normal lessons they have now also almost come to the end of another Modules worth or Period 6 and AM advisory intervention sessions. We hope that they have found this extra support helpful as they head towards Mock 2. All of the information about the forthcoming mocks is available on Bromcom for the students to access and with two weeks until they begin please do reach out to teaching staff via the college mailboxes if you have any queries https://leighacademymascalls.org.uk/contact-us/
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Year 9 Parents’ Evening last night. This is a significant milestone for our students as they begin the process of deciding which subjects to take at GCSE, and the high level of attendance demonstrates how well-supported our students are at home during this transition.
The journey continues immediately after the half-term break, when students will attend a dedicated assembly. This will introduce the specific options blocks for this academic year. Following this, the academy website will be updated with the options grid, and we will share the details with all parents and carers alongside a comprehensive options booklet. This is designed to help you and your child understand the specific content and requirements of each subject area.
To further support you, we are hosting an Options Evening on Wednesday 5th March at 5:30pm. This evening is a vital opportunity to ensure you are clear on the process and how to best support your child in making the right decisions for their future.
Please do note that there are some slight changes to the requirements this academic year. Following recent governmental education changes, the Ebacc measure no longer exists. As a result, students will no longer be required to choose a language for GCSE. However, they will still be required to choose a Humanities subject—either History or Geography—as has been the case in previous years.
We look forward to working with you over the coming weeks to ensure every student feels confident and informed about their choices.
