50% true: The building MAY be used in some capacity temporarily, but there are no long-term plans to occupy the building.
Enrollment numbers can be found on the "Harrington" tab of this website. Look for updated numbers after our Fall 2021 student count.
Here is a list of enrollment numbers as reported to the State of Michigan:
We are proud to partner with neighborhood elementary schools in our area. Whether it is Mar Lee, Tekonsha, Homer, etc. we depend on research-based studies that show neighborhood elementary schools are part of providing the best educational environment for our critical-age learners. Click here for a document containing a list of articles regarding neighborhood schools.
Each new facility will have finish work like landscaping. Our current buildings are maintained by local businesses who have been a part of a public bid process. We pride ourselves in using local companies to service our facilities.
The location of the elementary is currently unknown because the MPS School Board has not voted on or approved its location. Discussion of this matter and a potential vote will occur on Oct. 11th.
The conditions at Harrington were evaluated by our Facilities Needs Assessment Committee. This committee of nearly 30 uniquely qualified members unanimously agreed that Harrington Elementary did not have an equitable learning environment when compared to the other three elementary buildings in the district.
There are air improvements listed in this bond for Marshall Middle School, Gordon Elementary, and Harrington Elementary (since it would be a new facility). The chillers at MHS were in need of repair this fall and parts were delayed. The other buildings have new and/or fully functional HVAC systems. ESSER II funds are being allocated for a new Trane Control System for the entire district. This will improve our HVAC system districtwide.
Bond proposal funds cannot be used for operational costs. They also cannot be used for repair or maintenance costs.
Gordon's sewer issues have to do with tree roots within the system as well as their interaction with the city sewer system. The fix for this issue is not as simple as allocating the funds.
The bond application can be viewed by clicking HERE and reviewing each building's itemized expenses or see the screenshot below for a cost summary. There are funds for every project. MPS has worked alongside CSM for multiple decades and have come in under budget each time; our CSM representative stated at the forum that he's been managing projects like this for over 20 years and has never had a project not be completed. Each of the projects listed will be completed.
No bids have been received because there is an order and procedure to the school bond process. We are not at that point in the process.
