McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program
This program is designed to meet the needs of children and youth who are homeless. A student is considered homeless if he/she lacks a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. The homeless education program helps students enroll in school even if they lack the required paperwork. It helps them attend their original school or a school where they are currently living. The program ensures that students receive services comparable to those services received by their classmates.
Who Qualifies as a Homeless Student?
A homeless student could be sharing a house with other persons due to the loss of housing (these may or may not be relatives); could be living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds because of the lack of other accommodations. They could also be living in emergency shelters.
Homeless students are generally eligible for health services that are provided through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Additional information can be obtained by dialing 2-1-1 or by using the toll-free number 1 (877) 541-7905 or at the Web site http://chipmedicaid.org/ .
You can also call the Medicaid client hotline: 1-800-252-8263 or CHIP (low cost or free insurance for children) at 1-877-543-7669 or 1-800-647-6558.
