ACKNOWLEDGE COUNTRY: TODAY, EVERY DAY

We want you to be part of launching this year’s National Reconciliation Week by being part of a virtual Acknowledgement of Country, bringing our theme, In This Together to life.

WHY IS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY IMPORTANT?

An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

This will help create a more united Australia, as we all walk together towards reconciliation.

WHO CAN GIVE AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY?

Everyone. It can be given by non-Indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

WHAT DO I SAY?

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land on which I stand. I acknowledge the Wallumattagal people of the Durag nation and pay my respects to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may also wish to acknowledge their own mob/s.

HOW CAN I DO IT NOW?

Get out your phone (no... really!) and make a post on whatever social media you use - take a selfie, or a photo with a friend, along with the acknowledgement above (or even video yourself saying it).

Remember to use the hashtag #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020

WHEN CAN I DO IT?

We will come together on social media at 12pm (AEST) Wednesday 27 May to Acknowledge Country.

It doesn’t need to be live, you can pre-record, pre-write or pre-create your acknowledgement however you like and post it at or after 12 noon.

HOW CAN I DO IT VIRTUALLY?

Here are some extra ideas for how to Acknowledge the Land you are on and join in via social media.

At home

  • Record your Acknowledgement of Country via a video.

  • Take a photo of you, friends, or fam with the name of the Traditional Owners, or a sign of Acknowledgement.

  • Make chalk art or signs on your driveway and upload photos or video.

At work

  • Record a video message at your workplace or a photo Acknowledgement.

  • Ask and encourage your colleagues to take part to create a collage or compilation.

  • If working remotely, host a zoom meeting with colleagues and ask everyone to hold a sign Acknowledging the Land they are working/living on.
