ELA Overview

Goals for Literacy:

  • Determining central idea

  • Citing textual evidence

  • Drawing inferences from the text

  • Analyzing author’s perspective

  • Writing short literary analysis responses to texts

  • Literary elements: theme, character analysis, plot, setting, foreshadowing, etc.

  • Promote the inner joy that comes with reading


Goals for Written Expressions:

  • Improve writing fluency and written organizational skills

  • Using dialogue & description to develop characters

  • Including reliable evidence to support a thesis

  • Writing & supporting arguments with logical reasoning & valid evidence

  • Citing sources correctly to avoid plagiarism

  • Synthesizing research data to create a research project

  • Applying various rules of grammar


Goals for Speaking/Listening:

  • Making eye contact

  • Speaking at an appropriate volume

  • Pronouncing words correctly, clearly, and reading phrases fluently

  • Agreeing or respectfully disagreeing with ideas presented

  • During a discussion, stating well supported ideas
