Design by Nature is an autonomous platform of educational programs and knowledge sharing in the shape of bilingual workshops (EN/PT) that promote human experience in contact with Nature. The workshops take place outdoors, always at the intersection between the city's built environment and the natural environment, making Design by Nature a school of physical experiences.
The workshops propose the study of Nature's principles as a conceptual methodology for learning experiences that integrate physical and digital approaches into the design process. The workshops are shaped in basic, intermediate and advanced level modules. They are structured in theoretical classes and physical experiments that correspond to natural phenomena, which are taken as models for the development of projects using computational design tools and techniques. At the end of each module, every group's project will be physically prototyped at full scale.
The workshops welcome architecture, design and biology students as well as researchers, artists and other interested professionals. There are no software knowledge requirements to participate in the workshop. However, participants will need to bring their own laptops with Rhino 6 installed (if you do not have a software license, you can use a free 90-day trial version, available for Windows and Mac).
To make your application, go to Workshops tab, choose the available workshop, click on "apply" and fill out the application form. After submitting the completed form and making the payment, you will receive an e-mail confirming the application and further and detailed information about the workshop.
The application deadline for each workshop can be checked on the Calendar tab.
Design by Nature requires a fee of R$X per participant.
This fee does not include flights and accommodations. All participants are responsible for their own travel and health insurance, as well as for their personal belongings (laptop, equipments, documents, etc.). Design by Nature and any other institution involved in realizing the workshop are not responsible for lost or stolen goods.
Marko Brajovic, graduated from Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and obtained a Masters’s in Digital Arts at Pompeu Fabra University and a Master’s in Genetic Architecture at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, both in Barcelona. Marko Brajovic is founder and Creative Director at Atelier Marko Brajovic based in São Paulo, Brazil.
Guilherme Giantini, graduated from the University of Campinas and obtained a Masters' in Bioinspired Computational Design by the same institution. He performs as a BIM architect and computer designer at Atelier Marko Brajovic and as a lecturer at Belas Artes São Paulo.
For it is an autonomous and flexible platform, Design by Nature does not happen in a single, predefined physical space. The coordination of educational programs takes place within the physical infrastructure of allied institutions that host and promote the platform, such as Atelier Marko Brajovic and ALDEIA RIZOMA.
Atelier Marko Brajovic space is a multi-functional architecture between gallery, showroom and office with more than 200m² and 6m indoor height walls for projection surfaces and lighting infrastructure designed for exhibitions, inaugurations and now workshops.
All of this located in São Paulo, in the heart of Pinheiros neighborhood between Artur de Azevedo and Oscar Freire streets.
Design by Nature is one of the activities offered by Atelier Marko Brajovic SCHOOL that offers a program of workshops on Biomimetics and other approaches inspired by Nature through hybrid academic teaching experiences characterized by feedback between analog and digital processes.
The objective of this program is to create opportunities for the exchange and expansion of theoretical and technical knowledge in short learning modules on specific topics.
Aldeia Rizoma is an ecological condominium that covers a 320.000m² area embedded in subtropical forest in UNESCO protected Paraty (RJ) region, bordering, on one side a Rio Perequê-açu river shore, and on the other extreme the Caminho do Ouro cultural heritage, on a border with Serra da Bocaina National Park. Its an integrated co-living concept where private properties and shared common areas operate under common interest of the Aldeia Rizoma members for living as a family in synchronicity with Nature and respecting local communities.
Inside Aldeia Rizoma, the new Forest Colab is designed to host events on science, art and culture in a learning format inspired by Nature's technologies. Disciplines as botany, ecology, climate change, bioprospecting, forest schooling, forest medicine, biomimetics, design and arts for all ages will be held in a multi-functional transformable architectural space, completely integrated in the natural context. It's suitable for hosting meetings, co-working, lecturing, teambuilding, researching and crafting open for all Aldeia Rizoma members.
