In this project, students worked in small groups to create a podcast in which they discussed key questions tying together their learning in the West African Civilizations unit with the issues raised in the film Black Panther.
A sampling of the learning goals of this project include:
Having high-level academic discussions about student learning
Creating an engaging, professional product to share learning with others beyond the classroom
Effective project management
Effective time management
Effective preparation for a high-level academic assignment
Making multiple revisions of a product
Effective communication and collaboration with group mates
Each group included multiple on-air personalities, one audio engineer, and one producer. Groups worked together to decide on the questions to tackle in their podcast, then spent two class periods on individual prep for each question. Groups then came together for one prep session, before heading into the booth to record the conversation that would become the rough draft of their podcast.
After recording, students spent 3 class periods working together to edit the rough cut into a finished product, which they checked against the project rubric before exporting.
