sketchup

Objectives:

In this unit we will model and manipulate 3 dimensional objects using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software. The lessons will focus on design for architecture in both exterior and interior settings. We will use SketchUp software.

Concepts and Vocabulary:

  • 3D Objects consist of Faces, Edges, and Vertices.

  • Faces, Edges, and Vertices can be split, combined, pulled, and pushed to create different shapes.

  • The Face of an object may be rendered with color or texture.

  • The color or texture on a face of an object may have a range of opacity.

  • 3D space is designated with x, y, and z axis. X represents “left, right” horizontal. Y represents vertical. Z represents “front, back” horizontal.

  • In 3D graphics program, the camera represents the view by which the human “views” the scene. The camera may be repositioned by rotating and panning.

  • 3D objects may be viewed as wireframe, shaded, shaded with textures, and other types of views depending on the type of drawing the user needs at the time of creation.

  • Shapes can be combined into “components” and reused throughout the drawing. Components can also be saved and exported to other projects.

  • The toolbars in SketchUp provide tools for creating shapes, along with tools for editing size, shape, and fill for shapes.

Skills and Product:

  • Students will combine the basic shapes (rectangular prism, cylinder, Arc) to create a 3D model.

  • Students will use stretch, pull, divide, and cut to modify basic shapes into complex 3D shapes within their model.

  • Students will use texture, opacity, color, and imported components to provide detail to their 3D model.

  • Students will use text options to label and describe their 3D model.

  • Students will create components within their model to represent repeated design elements.

  • Students will import external components and make edits of size, texture, and opacity to enhance their model.

  • Students will create models from drawing using exact dimensions.
