There are many subtle differences between the international rules (FIBA) that we will be using in this tournament, and American Federation rules (NFHS) that the international schools used to use some years back and the Dodds schools still use. Since there are too many to list all of them, here are some of the main differences between the two rules.
Backcourt (time)
FIBA - 8 seconds.
NFHS - 10 seconds.
Backcourt violation (on throw in)
FIBA - May NOT throw from front to backcourt.
NFHS - MAY throw from front to backcourt.
Time Outs
FIBA - Two 1 minute in 1st half, 3 in 2nd half. Must be requested by coach at score table. Time out granted only during dead ball.
NFHS - Two 30 second, three full minute for the whole game. Can be requested by player or coach by team in control.
Substitution during free throw
FIBA - Only before 1st free throw.
NFHS - Only before last free throw.
Bonus
FIBA - On 5th team foul (2 shots). Team fouls reset after each quarter.
NFHS - On 7th team foul (1 and 1) and on 10th team foul (2 shots). Team fouls reset after each half.
Time Stopped
FIBA - After a made basket in the last 2 minutes of game
NFHS - Never stopped after a basket.
Free Throw (lane spaces)
FIBA - Only 3 defensive and 2 offensive players.
NFHS - First 4 lane spaces on both sides may be occupied.
Free Throw (movement)
FIBA - Only players in lane may move on release of ball.
NFHS - All players must wait for ball to touch ring or backboard.
