STLP Events and Projects at MCKA

Marion County was once known as the entertaining hotspot for Motown and Rock and Roll music. With music being one of my passions and Lebanon being my home, this was the perfect topic to cover for my STLP Documentary. Through research, gathering artifacts and interviewing local natives who encountered up and rising stars in the 1960’s and 70’s, I was overwhelmed with how many entertainers got their start right here in Lebanon, KY. Famous artists such as Ike and Tina Turner, James Brown, Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, B. B. King, Stevie Wonder, Etta James, Bob Seger, Percy Sledge and many more who went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Hyleme George and Obie Slater were the dynamic duo who brought these artists in and provided a place for them to entertain. The entertainment spread like wildfire and people came to Lebanon, KY from all over. Hundreds and even thousands drove to Central Kentucky to see what all the buzz was about. These artists have not only inspired me but many other musicians in our community who are chasing their dream.
Kayton Shewmaker is a young entreprenuer who has created a website to showcase her business, k8creatz. Kayton states, "I want this website to represent me so I am taking my time." This website shows her artwork and how this little hobby of hers has turned into a booming business. She used google sites to create the website, and ProCreate to make her custom backgrounds to represent her. This project took her a little over a month to finish. She sells custom items from keychains to family ornaments. Not only does she make these items just for you but also personally delivers them face to face because she wants her customers to know how much she appreciates their support. She started with word of mouth advertisment just in her local community to creating this website which is going to expand her business beyond Marion County. Kayton is excited to share her passion of artwork with the world.
Sophia Eastwood is a ninth grade student at MCKA and has always had a passion for art. She found that the perfect STLP project for her was digital art. Sophia loves anime and wanted to do something along those lines. She said, "I just added a bunch of different aspects, details, and personalities about different anime characters from a volleyball anime that I liked. I just had fun with it." She used an app called Pro Create to complete this project, which took over a month. If she could go back and redo this project over again she would change the color of the hair tips but other than that she wouldn't change a thing. Besides this project Sophia has done an infographic with a group of other students for STLP. Sophia's creativity and artist abilities helped to make this project a success.
Eigth grade students Vanessa VanWhy and Karly Spalding have come to your rescue. When it comes to college you become so busy and theres not much time to be worried about what you are going to eat. Luckly these girls have a solution. They have made a website with various recipes to help with the college experience. They have used google sites, slides, and drawings to complete this project. Vanessa says, "We both wanted to cook for our projects and everything just fell into place." Both girls are dedicated and love being involved in their school's work. However, this project doesn't just happen in a day! It took Karly and Vanessa about a month to finish this project. If these girls had a chance to redo their project they would have presented their videos a different way. With all that being said, shoutout to these girls for making "Cooking in College" pain free.
Noah Vandyke is a ninth grade student who has always been envolved in his school and community. Noah loves farming and has always wanted to design or create a farm logo of his own. STLP gave him this opportunity. He used the Photopea Program to create a graphic design that includes a cow and a background with words and color. It took him about a month. Noah said, "I am actually very satisfied with the outcome of the project but if I had to redo one thing I would go through and make the cow have more detailed spots." With all that being said Noah made sure to take his time and make everything detailed so everything looked as professional as possible.
Roseanna Peterson is a ninth grader at MCKA who is a part of the Teen Leadership program at school and has took it upon herself to make a logo for them because they have never had a one for the club at our school. She used Canva to create this progect which took her 2 weeks to get the final logo, and if she could do her project over again she would either change the font on the logo or choose a different pattern instead of the stars she used originally. In the past Roseanna has been a part of a newscasting project and currently she is working on an technical writing and screen capture project. Roseanna worked hard on her project and hopes you like it.
