Janelle Brouwer

Superintendent, MISD

Marion Independent School District

MEET OUR SUPERINTENDENT:

Dr. Janelle Brouwer serves as the Superintendent for the Marion Independent School District, a role she began in the 2019-2020 school year.  Prior to her role as the Superintendent, she served the district as the Assistant Superintendent.  Additionally, Dr. Brouwer has leadership experiences at the AEA level and as a building principal, as well as classroom experiences teaching special education and elementary education.  She is a graduate of University of Iowa, with a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, as well as an alum of Idaho State University where she completed her Master's Degree and Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa where she began her educational journey with degrees in elementary education and special education.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT:

Welcome to the Marion Independent School District (MISD), where our Mission is to 'Foster a community of learners in developing the knowledge and skills to be Future Ready'.  We strive to support each learner as an active participant in their education.  MISD provides a 'small school family feel' with big school amenities including amazing opportunities with community partners for students to participate in job shadows and internships, a wide array of extracurricular offerings, and tremendous parent and community support for our learners.

MISD proudly serves over 3,100 students, employs over 380 staff, and manages a 30M budget annually.  We maintain enrollment of just under 2,000 students in our comprehensive PK-12 programs and just over 1,100 students enrolled in our Marion Home School Assistance Program, which serves students throughout the metro and surrounding area.  In addition to academic rigor, the district offers a variety of activities for student involvement, with nearly 90% of students participating in 1 or more extracurricular activities as well as school and community volunteer opportunities.  The annual graduation rate, at 98%, is consistently above the state average.  Our graduates have earned the highest college credit per student in the metro area.  Evidencing the quality provided by MISD, our annual open enrollment into the district is the highest in the metro area with open enrollment making up over 30% of our student body.

Over the past few years the district has proudly worked to upgrade facilities and ensure that our physical spaces also support our mission of Future Ready learners.  I love seeing the pride our students/athletes take in the new and newly renovated locations to include the Marion Stadium and renovations to Francis Marion Intermediate, as well as the continued construction on the Marion High School auditorium and Parkview Elementary.  The improvements are only possible given the tremendous community support from the March 2021 bond election, a tax-neutral proposal which passed by an overwhelming majority.

I am proud to be a part of our thriving district.  Thank you for allowing us to partner in you child's education.

Sincerely,

Janelle Brouwer
